Meh. It’s at least something to discuss seeing there’s not been much news about these negotiations.

All I am saying at this late point if you don’t have your best offer, the other party may not want to play the game. The post I replied to said you start low. Well, sometimes you can’t start low if the other guy has other good choices.
Of course they have to be prepared to up their offer.

10.125 x 8 years:
150% increase of previous cap and double the amount of $’s he got from his 6 year contract.
Johnny deserves an 8 digit contract

Plus, the offering team is walking him to UFA.
I'm not sure what "effectively negotiate a 9-year deal" really means in this contenxt, it would be against the rules.

Labanc and Kotmaniemi appear to have had handshake deals (or at least a framework in KK’s case) for subsequent extensions.
The problem with matching is you can’t trade him so you are totally over a barrel.

Johnny is UFA, it’s not a negotiation. It’s a pitch. If Flames are waiting on a counter, it better be because they were promised one and IMO that’s unlikely at this point.

Handshake deals are not enforceable, so the player takes the risk if he declines or gets injured that deal disappears. Or if the player has a huge breakout year, the player now wants more.

It’s the flames first offer. I can guarantee it will be more than that. Once Johnny decides Calgary is the place he wants to be , it will take less than a day to come to an agreement on money. My guess it’s around $10.5 .

Why is that unlikely when multiple insiders have reported that Gaudreau's camp is doing exactly that this week?

I still think he signs when it is all said and done but no doubt I am nervous.
The messaging there is no plan B is likely from the Flames because they remain focused on plan A. I felt a little encouraged by the Treliving interview yesterday that they obviously still feel confident they will get these guys signed. All of the stuff we are hearing is noise for sure.
I have heard more than one Orange Julius type rumors that state he is getting close to signing and there is optimism it gets done. Absolutely can’t trust the sources so haven’t bothered posting but it aligns with what some others have said.
I just want this to be resolved by the draft so the team has time to make moves.
Mangiapane feels like the perfect offer sheet candidate. Assuming Johnny signs and they are still working on Tkachuk on July 13th it would be a great time for a team to pounce on Mangiapane and the Flames can’t necessarily do much to match if they are still sorting out the top guys and how they will be paid

If you need to make it 10 or 10.5, just do it. Just save yourself from overpaying the bottom 6.

It’s absolutely a negotiation, since they are the only ones at the table. After UFA day it’s more about pitches, but even then finer points get negotiated.
Treliving does fair contracts, if history is any judge. I’m pretty confident the Flames will offer the most money. And I’m also sure there is a lot more talk than what’s being guessed at here.

Friedman also mentioned that 'the Flames are ... willing to be flexible there' after mentioning the offer. Sure sounds like a strong opening bid with signals to Johnny's camp that they're seriously interested in making a deal.

1000%, but why not just start in the double digits.
If Johnny accepts $10.5mil we would have been partying on 17th 3 weeks ago.
$12mil X8.

It’s definitely a negotiation. He is not a UFA yet, so they are trying to negotiate the number (if there is one) that it would take for him not to go to UFA.
As I said earlier, 9.5M is an absolutely reasonable starting point IF Johnny intends to stay. It’s not complicated, if he wants to be here he’ll put a counter offer in. I think it makes sense that he hasn’t decided on what he wants to do yet, hence no counter. The moment he counters it basically means he’s willing to stay at the right price.

So to date gaudreau has been pretty much a point per game guy.
If he signs a deal for say $10.5 - do the expectations for him - in terms of point production change?
I feel that anything less than 90 points per season would be a disappointment for that kind of cash

If Gaudreau has legit first line linemates, I don't see 90 points per season over the next 4-5 seasons as all that difficult for him. He's a known quantity at this point, and one of the most consistent players in the nhl. If he's not putting up 90 points, it's almost certainly because management/coaching has him playing with sub par linemates.

Even at $10.5M over 7-8 years, Johnny is worth it. Every year that his line has been filled with half-decent or good players, he's been a top six winger in the league - look no further than his AS voting record for proof. That's also with sub-par coaching for all but one season. Treliving should be fired if he's playing games and putting forward a BAFO of $9.5M

How dare you make the assertation that Ritchie, Leivo, and Simon aren't first line quality players
