Oh, I thought this discussion was prompted about Lucic but it was JVR who was the "33 year old cap dump" being discussed. My bad.
I agree that actual money is a more important factor than cap-hit at this point given the league dynamic. Teams too close to the cap are now just going over it intentionally with Seabrook and Weber, and several teams have gutted their teams to rebuild and/or reduce payroll maybe due to COVID so a lot of cap space out there right now.
A team with unlimited money, i.e. Toronto, could probably trade for players like Lucic/Ladd right now at negative value, pay their bonus, and then trade them again and in the case of Lucic probably at a positive value. Could be a way to buy some picks like they did back with Kolzig (if not for the NTCs).

That guy is talking about Flames players

Andrew Mangiapane and the Penguins? I am told that should Malkin and Letang say no to the offers the Penguins have on the table I am told they absolutely LOVE Mangiapane…

The Flyers are trying to move JvR and Seattle I am told has interest…as might Arizona. Gostisbehere would love JvR in Arizona. The Flyers main target for over a year is Gaudreau…Kadri is a possible fall back..

The Flames are not going to move Monahan. They are not going to move their franchise player they are trying to bring backs best friend. Also, he would have to agree as he will be in LTIR. Plus, if it takes him a year to start getting back to the old Monahan they might be able to extend him on the cheap. I don't see any way Monahan moves.

Gaudreau isn't 12. He can have a fulfilling professional hockey career far away from one of his friends.

I don't think they move Monahan for a number of reasons.
1. His recent history of production and cap hit make it difficult.
2. Only one year left to ride out if he doesn't rebound.
3. His issues are 100% due to injury. It's not effort or that he was just never good. He knows how to play and works hard.
4. There is hope that his second surgery has addressed the issues. Trading him, especially if you need to give up assets to entice a team, will look really bad on the GM if he rebounds.
5. He is a popular guy on the team. That should never be the sole reason for holding on to a player, but on top of everything else, it does matter.

I would think the Flames absolutely would move Monahan if it were possible.
With his last few seasons, he is not the same player he once was....
Flames need salary cap relief...
They can't afford to have huge contracts on the third and 4th lines if they sign Johnny.
However they don't have a allot of option with this player
Once next season is over, Monahan would not be resigned in my opinion
Not sure he can recovery from his injury history.....

The Flames have shopped Monahan for the better part of two years into this last season.

If they re-sign Gaudreau and Tkachuk, they absolutely have to take a look at moving Monahan and/or Lucic. Just the reality of the salary cap.
If either of them leave, then it's clearly not worth it to pay picks and/or prospects and/or taking on other bad contracts. Just deal with one more year and $11M opens up for 2023 free agency.

Kapanen has also had a down year, that’s why I asked. What about Zucker straight up?

per Larry Brooks, Copp and Ryan Strome intend to go to UFA, leaving the Rangers looking for a 2nd line center on the trade market

All reports are that he will be back playing hockey well before the start of the season.
He's immovable until he shows himself healthy and productive. And if by some chance that actually happens, not sure why Calgary then moves him?

Kapanen is in the dog house and if Mallon walks Monahan is a low cost option for them (obviously not cap but term wise).
Thing is I think the Flames are set on the wing considering Toffoli was third line RW in the playoffs. They likely need a 2/3C more than a winger

Schiefele has been rumored to Boston for months now, but NYR have way better assets to offer to get a trade like that done. They have a bit of a cap crunch issue, but if they move Nemeth and fill the bottom line with min contracts, it's doable.
Kakko for Schiefele? Zibenijad/Schiefele/Chytl is a pretty good centre group.

Will be interesting to see what the Jets scrap together down the middle if both Scheifele and Dubois get traded

Another thing is that Burke is with the Pens (yes, I know he isn't the GM, but it'd be silly to think he doesn't provide input) and based on everything he's said about him, Burke is a big fan of Monahan - both the player and the person - and I feel like Burke is the kind of guy that won't hesitate to give Monahan another chance.

Per Arthur Staple of the Athletic:
Quote:
The Flames' Sean Monahan, who is
coming off March hip surgery (his
second in as many years) and has a
year left at $6.375 million, has been
discussed in trade talks as well with
the Rangers, according to two
sources, but he certainly would not
fetch a huge cost in a trade given his
downward trend the past two seasons
and injury woes.
