How? By playing in the minors, signing an ELC, signing an extension, and having a great career in Calgary for every year he signed to play for?
Gaudreau is not Adam Fox.

He is leaving a good team situation here along with good linemates if he so chooses.

His numbers have fluctuated hugely here.
Its easy to lose sight of how challenging the Flames cap situation is: $27M to sign at least 10 players (for a 22 man roster). 6 of those at league min leaves 22.5M for the remaining 4.
Losing Monny and/or Lucic simply upgrades from impossible to difficult. One way or another, the Flames will be losing valuable pieces from last year’s team.

By making it extremely difficult for them to pivot. It’s not his fault. At all. Which is why I distinguished it from the Tavares situation.

Agreed. Gaudreau lived up to his end of the bargain and doesn't owe the Flames anything. It will be nice if he re-signs, but he was nothing but good for this organization.
The only thing I hope is that if he decides that he wants to move on, that he is honest with management so that they can have as much time as possible to pivot.

Johnny's older sister and uncle are still liking tweets about Calgary and extending Johnny. Am still hopeful.

Well on the plus side if we lose Johnny we found a promising replacement who should attract more women to the sport

Yeah, even if he doesn’t want to resign with the Flames, he needs to use them to get the best contract for himself.
Unless Treliving gave him the best offer he can’t refuse, this is going to the wire

I doubt that that deal was ever available. Certainly not at that price.
It would have made Johnny a UFA at an age that would not have been to his advantage. The cost to push his UFA back two years would have been enormous.
There is a reason that it was only 6 years.

It was six years ago. There are many members on the Board who joined only after the Gaudreauvertime incident.

I was happy with the deal at the time it was signed, and extremely pleased with how it played out. Even in his down years between 2019-21 Gaudreau has never been overpaid, and I doubt that would gave been the cade had he signed for eight years.

I’m starting to ready myself for Gaudreau not signing.
Maybe it opens up Tkachuk to take the leading role in this team. Maybe without expecting Gaudreau to win us games this gives a different play style and opportunities to grow.
Looking on the bright side so I’m not so terribly crushed.
Like the one poster who brought up Tavares and the Islanders. They sure did fine without him.

Johnny is a more talented and impactful player than Tavares

I really could see something like this happening , what do you guys think?

Yeah no
Forsberg
RS - 0.83 PPG
PO - 0.70 PPG
Gaudreau
RS - 1.01 PPG
PO - 0.79 PPG

It’ll be a HUGE mistake for Gaudreau in my opinion to not re-sign in Calgary. It’ll be… not a good decision.

I'd be 100 percent on the Forsberg train if Johnny walks. Awesome player.

I'll be 100% on the whiskey train if Johnny doesn't sign with the Flames.
The team is worse without him regardless of who they replace him with, that's why so many people want a rebuild. Losing your best player then overpaying a replacement who isn't as good won't bring much success.

The problem is there is no rebuild without Sutter. Also doesn’t feel like “so many people want a rebuild” more than the same 3-4 people saying the same things as last summer despite being muted for the entire season last year because the team was much better than they thought.
I don’t disagree that is the better path for the Flames to take if Johnny leaves but we know as long as the old farmer is behind the bench they are going for it.

The team was much better than everyone thought it would be, but I feel I’ve been pretty consistent. To win a Stanley Cup you pretty much need the foundational picks that this team has not made. The Stanley Cup Champions this season yet again showed that.
I’m all for signing Johnny and Chucky and running it back (although Tree needs to find a way to sign Johnny and Chucky AND improve the roster), but if we lose Johnny or Johnny and Chucky then what hope is left?
