The entire stretch sure, but elements of the core have been around for multiple years for multiple playoff appearances. At some point you have to recognize you don't have the key horses and maybe the guys you think are the star players that can take you to the promise land are better situated in lesser roles. So how do you navigate from one strategy to the other? Its tricky but its certainly not just substituting depth players.

When was the last time a sign-and-trade happened in the NHL? I can't think of one – ever.

There is no ‘massive fail’ when a player goes to free agency. The system is designed that way intentionally, and no GM in the world has the ability to force free agents to stay: hence the word ‘free’. Why do some fans have trouble with this concept?
I never said it was common practice or that it will happen, just that I hoped so we can retrieve some value for losing our superstar. Highly unlikely but just a thought that popped into my head. No need to jump down my throat.

Gaudreau is better at hockey than Filip Forsberg. Forsberg is definitely better at being Swedish though.

If the Flames know Johnny is walking I could definitely see Forsberg being a back up option. I think most fans would be ok with that swap also

Not sure how this works but if both teams felt they couldn't get a deal done could they not trade their rights to each other as a back up plan?

If Johnny leaves I would be fine with Forsberg as a replacement but he's not nearly as dynamic of a player and the Flames would not be as good of a team. The other issue if Gaudreau leaves is there is no guarantee the Flames will be able to convince any of the top UFA's to sign in Calgary. Treliving is likely going to have to be highest bidder by a good margin to get one of them and that's if guys like Forsberg and Kadri hit the market.

If Nashville thought Johnny would sign there they might trade for his rights but if Johnny leaves I bet he is going back home to NJ or Philly.

That would be sweet if Gaudreau leaves.

Forsberg is a notch below Gaudreau though. It would not be an upgrade. That's pumping his tires a bit too much.

In the playoffs Forsberg is an upgrade on Johnny.

no idea how anyone would take Forsberg over Gaudreau, all things being equal.

Gaudreau is a modern Kent Nilsson.

And he’s getting even better under Darryl.

Look at the players Forsberg played with this year , you put Forsberg with Lindholm and Tkachuk I bet he hits 100 pts also. I dont think there is a big gap between the two , I will take a few less points for a player that can actually withstand the playoff grind. Forsberg is a right handed left winger which is interesting.

I don’t pretend to know how this is going to play out, maybe Johnny signs here, maybe he doesn’t.

But what gives me some of the strongest amount of optimism he will? Gaudreauvertime lurking CP in this thread for the first time in 6 years.

I believe that handle is associated in some way with his agent. If his agent cares in the slightest what Flames fans think, it is because his client is likely to come back here. If the plan was to leave and go back out East, I don’t think the agent would care what the fans for his former team think while the negotiation is going on.

What is the story behind this Gaudreauvertime?

That's what I was wondering.

He hasn't posted since 2016 and has been in the sin bin since then, that's a hell of a long time in the penalty box.

I just grabbed my post from earlier in the thread:

If they are connected with Johnny in any way, it would be cool if they would just post about it normally. Not like this group of posters need convincing of Johnny's talent.

I don't want any consolation prizes and I prefer not to even think about having to go there, but Forsberg is probably the camp I would go to first, and we could easily meet his demands as well as boast that Swedish culture & comraderie.

I don't want Forsberg, I think he is going to age very poorly.
