Why would that matter? He isn't play-by-play.

I didn't always feel this way but I came to realize how good boomer is in the last couple years. Will be missed in a big way. Hope he resurfaces in some format.

Presumably whatever station picks up the rights will have more sports talk than what they have now.
770 currently has a sports segment from 7-8pm every night.

I would like to hear an unfiltered version of Boomer and Warrener, throw some guests in there, Krahn, Commodore. That would be on my subscribe list.

I hope all the best personalities move to the next station where things are run competently and the PBP are sent on the road as they should be.
I'm as done with Rogers as probably every person on the station.
I was hoping for TSN after the last TV contract. I ####ing hate McSportsnet broadcasts more and more by the season.
TSN, 770, whatever. Just make it happen.

I totally agree that Rogers is crap but everything I’ve read about the Boomer situation sounds to me like this was his decision to leave, not Rogers.
I can’t imagine waking up at 3am to do radio is overly appealing to very many people, especially ones like Boomer with a family.
Sad day. He was great but best of luck to him in the future. I’d listen to a podcast of his for sure.

Is it in fact true that this was 960's last season broadcasting the Flames?
I've been looking and stumbled across this from a year ago
Quote:
Continuing its long-standing partnership in bringing world-class entertainment to hockey fans in Alberta and across Canada, Sportsnet today announced a multi-year regional broadcast rights extension with the Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers
Building on a landmark agreement that established Sportsnet as the regional broadcaster of the Oilers and Flames for the past 10 years, Canada's #1 destination for hockey will continue to deliver exclusive regional coverage of Alberta's NHL franchises.
|
Would multi-year not suggest more than last year and this recent one?

SN960 actually had one of their stronger ratings periods in a long time, which is likely due to the Flames' success. Even still, they only had more total listeners than Funny, Wild, and CBC-2.
Unfortunately, Numeris doesn't seem to make their full set of data available anymore and these are just overall percentages, so it doesn't give insight into the total number of listeners or hours tuned, which are the numbers that really matter to advertisers.
Considering the costs for the broadcast rights and producing the live games, it would not be surprising if the station just doesn't pay its own way. I believe they didn't even have Wills and Loubo travel to road games this year, even when COVID restrictions were relaxed.
|
Those don't look great for the station as a whole. I thought there were some metrics a couple years ago showing that Boomer in the morning show did have great penetration though.

Actually...just saw this from Flamesnation.
Quote:
Aside from “multi-year,” terms were not disclosed. The deal applies to both radio and the regional TV broadcasts. Between this deal and the existing national deal, all Flames games will be broadcast on Sportsnet 960 The Fan on radio and some manner of Sportsnet channel – West, One, 360 or Flames – on television.

Boomer and Pinder diligently taking their morning Cialis, evidently.
Maybe thats what the rest of the station needed to stay on air.
No wonder Nault always sounded so frustrated.

I’m out of market and I’m sure going to miss Boomer on the morning show.
Fireball got me laughing every time I heard it, to name just one example.

Be careful what you wish for. TSN ####ed Team1040 so badly in Vancouver, which was (IMO) the best sports radio in the country.
They literally cut in mid broadcast, played a Green Day song, then started playing a comedy segment.

Weird that Boomer this morning is saying he has no plans on what's next yet has gone on on how he loves the morning show. Loves doing the show. Just my take but it sounds like he may have been lowballed to the point he feels he could probably make more money doing something different.

A guy as smooth as Boomer could easily snag some sales or marketing job in almost any industry and make $150k+
He might be making that now (I have no clue), but at least he won't have to wake up at ungodly hours every day.

This is just purely my own speculation. But I recall he got pretty emotional when talking about how friends and colleagues (ie. Jay and Kleine) were unceremoniously laid off by Rogers. And then that trend continued with others being let go. He probably really didn't like the direction Rogers was taking, and decided to take matters into his own hands rather continue on a sinking ship.

I feel like a guy with his talent could gather the troops (Pinder and Warrener), expand their audience (He's appreciated outside of just Calgary), and make MORE money with a podcast...And as a bonus NOT have to wake up at 3am.
...Or maybe I am just hoping that I get to continue listening to the show...
