Since joining the Flames as an 18YO straight from junior....MT is 25th in the entire league in offensive production. 19th at ES.
Defensively he is more than adequate even though he is just an average skater speed wise but also super strong on his skates.
A beast along the boards and capable of pissing off any player in the league apparently.
You just dont see many guys like him so when you find them...you do everything you can to hold onto them.

I think some fans fears about losing Tkachuk for nothing next off-season are greater than Treliving's.
If the best you can get is Tarasenko and a low 1st for example then you hang onto Tkachuk.

100%. Not easy to find guys like that. He can score pretty goals, etc, but he has the ability to get greasy goals. That fight against klingberg set him and the team back. He hopefully learns from that going forward.
Good teams have a balanced line-up and he is a key part of our balance.

Tkachuk signing a 1-year QO and then going to UFA carries a bit of risk for Tkachuk — especially if Johnny leaves. Yes he can then sign with the highest bidder but I don’t see him duplicating last years numbers, no chance he does if 13 isn’t there (IMO). His value is high now and if he wants a long term deal (ie 5 years or more) it’s a good spot for him to leverage instead of waiting until next year.

He doesn't need to duplicate last years numbers though.
He will get paid regardless....short of a devastating injury. His history dictates as much and that even includes a horrible covid season mixed in.
All that said I believe he signs a 5 or 6 year deal in Calgary which would allow him one more decent contract before his career is up.

I think if you can trade Tkachuk before he signs a new contract to a team that believes they can sign him long term or sign him immediately upon trade (like St. Louis), they will get very good value for him.

If Tkachuk were to sign an offer sheet, the compensation for over $8,402,975 to $10,503,720 is:
2 First-round picks
Second-round pick
Third-round pick

Tarasenko is a UFA next summer, so I'm assuming you're implying that the Flames sign him as a UFA.
Tkachuk would easily fetch far more than a low (late?) 1st under any circumstances. So I think the premise is moot.
As for your conclusion, I think it depends on how competitive the Flames are at that point in the season.

Tkachuk is an RFA. He can accept his qualifying offer with CGY, sign a contract extension with CGY, or sign an offer sheet tendered by another team.

Frank Seravelli throwing a wet blanket on the Flames-Gaudreau negotiations again this morning. Boomer also backing that up saying it has been quiet.
Hoping for the best, preparing for the worst.

Taking a while to get to 5000

I get the impression / feeling that 8 years doesn't matter to Johnny.

Ahhh...right you are. Had it in my mushy memory there was another season.
Though i cannot believe anyone is coming in North of 9M on an offer sheet at this point.

It clearly doesnt.
IMO its obvious he wants to test FA. Not sure why he wouldnt at this point even if it means a few million less on his deal. There would be nothing stopping him from signing another short term deal at the end of this one other than injury to make that up.
He has earned the right to talk to 32 buyers instead of one. It really makes sense he does so.

Seravelli seems like he is stirring the pot too a little bit. And quiet is always good for Tre. My worry is Eric Francis. The guy loves taking the other side. When he said he thinks JG stays then my antenna was up.

Yep. Seravalli on 960 this morning saying the Flames made their pitch and the Gaudreau side has gone silent. He equated it to asking someone to marry you and when there is no answer, just a long pause, you already know the answer. Sounds like he's going to test free agency.

He doesn't need to put up another 40/100 season, but if Johnny leaves and he only puts up 70 points this year, that's a big difference IMO. Part of that is because I personally don't think Tkachuk is someone who can consistently generate offence on his own; he's a very good to elite finisher but needs teammates who can get him the puck in scoring areas. Who is going to do that if Johnny leaves?
I also agree he will re-sign for 5-6 years in Calgary to keep his options open.

Did you hear the interview? He's not stirring the pot as they went over a lot of other offseason trade rumours and at the end of the segment Boomer asked him about Gaudreau. His answer is exactly what he's heard through his channels so hardly stirring the pot. I think he was trying to be as nice as possible while saying he thinks Gaudreau is gone.
