I'm all for the fort idea. The drinking idea isn't a bad idea. I normally jsut load up on a couple fiction and a good history book, and listen to music.

I think the absolutely worst thing that can happen is to bring a book and finish it before the halfway point of the flight. Then I just walk around the plane.

Then bring "Feed My Dear Dogs"... it'll frustrate you and put you to sleep well before the flight is over. Also, I read fairly quickly and I can assure you that even if you read the entire time, you still won't finish the damn thing. You have to re-read half of it just to make sure it makes sense.

Make sure you don't get stuck with the middle seat. And if possible get an exit row seat as they have more leg room.

I also make sure i'm sleep deprived before I take a long flight. It makes sleeping on the plane much easier. A couple of good stiff drinks after take off will also help you sleep better.

Go see London during that 11 hour lay over.

I second the sleeping pills plus booze solution. If you know any doctors or pharmacists, see if they can prescribe you something. If not, take some melatonin and knock back a couple preflight. And although it's important to get a good night's rest the night before your flight (so your body isn't completely rundown by the time your trip is finished), wake up a little earlier than you normally would. A healthy workout that morning or the day before wouldn't hurt either.

And those neck pillows, while rather dorky, are quite helpful. Just spend the money and get a good one though- the cheap inflatable ones are worthless.

earplugs, soft eye cover (y'know, the stuff they give the business classers), window seat with a couple more pillows, blanket, and drink LOTS of water before the flight and then a couple wobbly pops on board. Nighty night!

Agreed with all the above.

Valium. A Beer or Two. Earplugs (essential). and maybe a geeky pillow if you can hack it, but is worth it.

Do that and you will actually LIKE flying.

Getting the pills should be easy. Go to the doctor, tell him you get very nervous on long flights and see if he can prescribe anything. He should give you a prescription for just a few pills.

Hopefully you like it in India. Ive been there like 5 times and since ur going in april it still should be pretty "cold" there, lol rather than the temperature being 45 degrees. But if u plan on staying there for May or June well then good luck because i hope ur prepared for 45 degrees from 8:00 in the morning to pretty much night long lol. Also good luck with the mosquitoes. I also recommend you take some kind of a bug repellant; trust me your gona need it!

If u don't mind spending money in London, go to the HMS Belfast, that ship is actually really cool. Trafalgar Square, if u want, Piccadillly circus (the big screen and advertisements) is a good site. Walk Across the thames on the tower bridge would be good too.

As for on the flight, I have a MP4 player that lasts about 3 - 4 movies or so if uc an't sleep, but I do suggest u sleep, its a lot easier...

What I dont' get is though, if u're going to India, why not fly the Asia route? Go into say Singapore or Hong kong or something, then fly to India from there? Is it longer or costs more?

How about some non-sleeping ideas? I have trouble sleeping on planes for whatever reason (thin air? seat straight up?) and get bored once my laptop dies. Can't read on planes for whatever reason (thin air limits oxygen getting to my brain, making me tired?) and yeah, I catch every single movie showing on planes, even if they suck.

Take your PSP for those long flights . . . . . I've got one to Rome coming up as well . . . . . or just hope they've got three really good movies and you've got two really good books.

EDIT: You have to really go looking for it because its out of the way, but from the London Eye you can walk to the Imperial War Museum - about 15 minutes I think through some twisting streets - which has some fairly fascinating things, including a Buzz Bomb, trench displays, tanks, a Spitfire, etc, etc.

Cowperson
If you go to Harrods go into By Appointment (the personal shopping part) and look for the hottest lady who works there (she will be wearing all black and has a Canadian accent) because that is my wife!

Oh and don't take a nap in any park you will lose your wallet/phone/shoes/life. Watch out for pigeon poo in Trafalgar square. Go on the London Eye with a camera and go to a busy pub during an important sporting event for some culture.

Have fun pal.

Go the pills and a beer route and you will sleep and be as comfortable as if you were in your own bed.

Ear plugs are also a requirement.

The only real long flights that I have been on, I was lucky enough to fly first class. And even then it is allmost unbearable. You will probably sleep a lot. Maybe if your going to India, bringing a lap top or a DVD player isn't something you want to pack along (I'm assuming your packing light I mean). Bring a book. Seriously, long flights suck. There won't be much to do and you will be kissing the ground when you get to India.

You can't imagine how much it sucks on a plane when you are dead tired, drunk and can't fall asleep.

Don't drink on the flight. It'll make you dehydrated and the experience will be worse.

I suggest drinking tomato juice. It will keep your stomach somewhat content between meals, has a delicious taste (if you have problem with water all the time) and won't make you feel like garbage. Another plus is, it doesn'tmake you piss as often as liquor or water will either. A couple of good books (nothing too heavy or you'll burn yourself out on reading).

I'd also suggest bringing some type of food. Like trail mix. Just something to snack on.

Bring gravol too, just in case.

Oh, and a sweater, because planes can get chilly.
