49 points career high and that was on the stacked highest scoring team in the NHL

Seems like a fair comparison with Anderson having a 47 point career high, I'm sure both guys expected more at this point in their career

Haha again the same thing about points with Bennett. I guess Coleman sucks too then.

Saw this on Reddit and thought it was interesting:

Another Championship team with their core built through the top-end of the draft, and then a lot of good execution on-top of that foundation.

A well put together team.

I was replying to the fact he said Bennett always leaves you wanting more after a career year where he took a big step. Just seemed like a poor example. Anderson fits much better as he is multiple seasons from when he got 47 points.

WRONG!! You don't win the cup with a core of players you drafted high in the first rouond....you do it by always being ok and drafting in the mid teens or trading away your first round picks.

They were somewhat lucky that they hit on all their high picks. That doesn't happen often.

Definitely, but not putting yourself in that situation to hit on those high picks = no chance at winning the Stanley Cup.

Basically the formula is to have a minimum two of the following: top10 G, C and D. Obviously you need depth, but with the exception of maybe St. Louis, you need to be top heavy if you want a cup.

Colorado - Mackinnon + Makar
Tampa - Stamkos + Kucherov + Hedman + Vasy
St. Louis - O'reilly + Petro
Washington - Backstrom + Ovie + Carlson
Pittsburgh - Crosby + Malkin + Letang + Fleury
Chicago - Toews + Kane + Keith
LA - Kopitar + Doughty + Quick
Boston - Bergeron + Chara + Thomas

Crazy that the only 3 players on that list who were not drafted by their team were Chara, O'reilly and Thomas. Shows the importance of having top5 draft picks and then nailing them. Compared to that list, unless Calgary goes the St. Louis road, we have some serious catching up to do.

They were also lucky that Mackinnon didn't take off right away as a superstar so they were able to get him locked up on a sweetheart deal once he did become a superstar. It took him until his 5th season to produce a point per game season and since then he's been blowing point per game out of the water for a measley $6 million AAV.

Agreed it is surprising to see how few players on that team were drafted with their picks. 6 is less than the current flames team has (8). You nailed it though by stating they hit on their high picks. Makar appears to be a generational talent and 3 players were picked ahead of him. MacKinnon was a slam dunk top pick. Landeskog was a nice piece and Rantanen is probably the best 10th overall pick since the 05 lockout.

I think the shrewd trades are what our this team over the top. Fleeced Toronto for Kadri, fleeced Ottawa/Nashville for Byram/Girard, fleeced the Islanders for Toews.

How they build that team isn't easily repeatable. Their bluprint isn't much different than anyone else's, except they were bad during years when elite talent was available in the 1st round, won the draft lottery to get MacKinnon, hit on their other high first round picks, and had other factors as you say with MacKinnon.

Yeah I wouldn’t bank on building a team with 5 players you drafted on the roster winning a cup.

That’s actually crazy how much of that Avs team was constructed via trades.

The Toews trade actually makes me pretty angry, considering what Treliving paid for Hamonic while dealing with a ####tier GM.

I wonder if maybe we could get Girard out of Colorado now that they’ll be in a crunch and have Makar, Bryam and Toews locked up.

Offensive minded PP guy, tier below the elite but quite strong w/ puck and quick

If we sign Johnny, and it becomes clear that Tkachuk won't sign long term, would anyone else favor the notion of testing the trade market on Tkachuk and then throwing the kitchen sink at Forsberg?

Yeah, for sure I would if Tkachuk signaled that he was going to leave anyway.

I see Poe’s comment like tanking is how to win but the top 5 picks were taken 11, 8, and 5 years ago. Rantanen was 7 years ago and was 10th but he has to be one of the best 10th picks of all time taken in a generational draft that is on its way to being as good or better than 2003.

Has a Canadian fanbase been patient enough with top picks to maybe wait 10 years to have a chance to win? Can a Canadian market be patient with a 48pt season 4 years after you take your franchise player 1st overall? Can a Canadian market be patient enough with a disgruntled player to not trade him as long as the Avs held onto Duchene?

Sakic fleeced 3 of his peers in key trades that helped build this team and also nailed their top picks. Not something that any GM could do. Hell I doubt Sakic could do it this good again.

Naw I would pivot to signing Mangiapane to a long term deal. I don’t think the Flames should be pursuing 2 $9M+ wingers unless it is our homegrown guys in Johnny and Chucky. If we keep Johnny and Chucky wants out I move him for a futures based deal and it eliminates the cap crunch from signing Mangiapane and Kylington.
