Point wasn’t Point yet, Vasilevsky wasn’t Vasilevsky yet. They had potential.

People seem to think JG wouldn’t see similar potential here, after a great regular season and the first PO series win since 2015, with 3 all stars including a second place Vezina candidate.
1 bad year blip of missing the playoffs by 1 point followed by 5 exceptional seasons...I don't see how you can say he was wrong about them being a top team.

He probably questioned his decision a bit that off-season after watching TOR make the playoffs and lose in six 1-goal-games to WAS. But any doubts have been completely eradicated.

It's true that the TBL roster wasn't that amazing on paper at that time...but they'd also just been to G7ECF and G6SCF. Not really comparable to G5rd2 and missed POs.

I just find it totally mind-bottling that you hadn't heard the actual term before...

I'm actually concerned more about Tkachuk's extension, it just doesn't have the same urgency as far as deadlines go. Big picture-wise though, losing a player like him to free agency at the age of 25 would be a bigger failure than losing JG at age 29 IMO. I know Gaudreau is a special player, but any player having another career year after the age of 30 is pretty unlikely. If I had to bet on who will be more productive over the next 8 years, I might have to pick Tkachuk.

I hope they both stay long term of course, but the longer the Gaudreau negotiations drag on, the more likely the Flames will need to just give Tkachuk his QO due to time constraints, and if he accepts it outright, that could be a bad sign and really limits what the Flames can do. I'd much rather them get started on a long term extension before it even gets to the QO stage. So yeah, technically 3 weeks to go, but logistically, the internal deadline should be set much sooner.

I suppose there is nothing stopping Treliving from getting started with an agreement with Tkachuk in the meantime, but I wonder how likely it would be for Tkachuk to agree to a long term deal not knowing if Gaudreau will be here too.

Plus if you front load it, he could be looking at 13-14M in year one. Hard to turn down.

But the Oilers are pretty terrible and the city of Edmonton? Well, yeah.

Ain't nobody got time for that, especially not Johnny. He'll be eager to get back at it with the Flames, a top team in the league to make more runs at it in those same 4-5 years.
Good points. And nothing saying he has to stay in Calgary for all 8 years. One thing I’ve been thinking about lately is that maybe Tre makes him some kind of ‘gentleman’s agreement’. As in, sign back on with us. Let’s take 2/3/4 more runs at this thing and if we don’t have any success or we actually win a cup in the next couple years I’ll trade you wherever you wanna go back east. He could take a couple more shots with some good Flames teams and when it’s time to retool in a couple years (which is inevitable) maybe Philly or NJ are contenders looking to add some high end talent.

Johnny’s contract at $10M per season in 4 years may not look so good to a contender with little cap space.

I don’t see Philly being in the conversation, they are a mess even if you’re okay with Torts.

NJ has two young core pieces up the middle and lots of cap space but they also have lots of holes in the lineup to fill, plus Bratt needs a big raise. Not sure if Lindy Ruff stays on behind the bench.

NYI is an interesting fit, as they have more parts in place compared to NJ (including defence and goal) but have a first time head coach. I’m sure Johnny would love that after what he experienced under Gulutzan and Ward, and one year after playing under Jack Adams winner Sutter.

Are there any other teams that would be realistically in the mix right now?

Boston, Pittsburgh and Washington could be players for Gaudreau’s services.

Any team really. Any team except the truly cap strapped.

And Pittsburgh. If he grew up a Flyers fan, ain't no way in heck he's a penguin ever. Ppl know where he lives and Philly fans....well they're Philly fans.

I dont know. I dont like how the entire team waits for him to make a decision before they can do something else.

On one hand it's a giant hole to fill. On another hand, the teams overreliance on Johnny during his tenure can stop and they can figure out a more balanced plan of attack.

Plus, I'm more fascinated with the aftermath of Johnnys decision. This IMO, is the most important offseason in Flames recent history. Maybe up to Iggys last year here. Yeah it's that important.

One wrong move can hand cuff this team for a decade. Some savvy moves can keep the train rolling.

I want to see how it unfolds now. Not 3 weeks from now. Or training camp.

Philly fans also hate NJD and the Rangers and the Caps.

But, one is already dead when the final nail is hammered into the coffin.

Or, it could look amazing. After another two years the cap will probably be pretty high.
