Here is a prime example of how this place gets dragged down. Go through Niks posts and tell me exactly what he contributes on here that positively adds anything to CP? Or is he just lurking and making snarky comments to try and create chaos? How many of his posts have anything to do with the Calgary Flames? How many break the rules? Go ahead, I'll wait. For this place to be a welcoming fun place to post and visit everyone should be welcome to contribute to the topic. Crack down on the trolls that were banned before and somehow managed to get back only to start their pot stirring again. We are all supposed to be Calgary Flames fans yet all it is is a hostile environment that posters like Nik feed off.

I still say money wins out 90% of the time. So few examples exist of players taking a discount to move home. There are many more examples of discounts to avoid changing teams. It’s a short career even over 7-8 years. Players know they can move anywhere afterwards. Or they can get traded or bought out. Or they might get hurt.

Any realistic Calgary 8 year offer is incredibly hard to beat from a pure cash perspective. So if JG opts for UFA and goes east, I’m certain there’s not much that could have been done. And I will simply turn the page. Advantage of being a fan for the whole history lol the Flames I guess. I’ve seen Nilsson, MacInnis, Newy, Fleury, Iginla all come and go.

Agreed. The whole "wanting to go home" thing is weird because it is only associated with certain players. Every player born in North America has a home state or childhood favourite team. It wasn't a narrative until LeBron did it. Then there was Stamkos stuff and it didn't happen. Tavares did it but really, how many players leave their team because they want to play for their hometown team?

I wonder if Calgary isn't offering 8 years, I could see the owners doing something silly like not allowing 8 year deals.

Johnny is about the become a father, His wife has major input on where he plays going forward, Jane and Guy don't seem to have any intention of jet setting to frozen Alberta winters to support raising their grandchild while he plays hockey in Canada. This is a family first group by all accounts. Johnny can walk if he wants to go home, to raise his family and have all the supports with it.

We will find out that the lure of playing with a Barzal in Long Island or going to play in Philly with his good buddy Kevin Hayes all while being a quick private jet flight away from all the grandparents will be too much to give up.

Saddest part will we will get some scuffed hope and dream that we can still be a contender without Johnny but Lindy is a 20-30 goal guy and Chucky is 70-80 Pts player without him and he too will head home to America.

Jay Bouwmeester, at least to his home province.

I can see the east being attractive for travel. I can see some players being attracted to climate in some places or the notion of living in NYC. That’s about it.

Yeah I mean I am sure it happens but I just think it is one of those weird narratives that only gets brought up for certain players. Like I always see these things about Matthews leaving Toronto for the Coyotes only because he was born there

I think they actually spent an extended period of time in Calgary this past season in late winter / early spring.

I can give you reasons he'll leave.

Max Contract - 7 Years. $$$$
Arizona State Tax - $$$$$$$$$$
Endorsements - $$$$$$$$$$$$$
Backroom State Gambling Income - $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

You've been kind of a prick to people concerned about his re-signing for over a year now. Don't try to cry victim now.

You add nothing but blind homerism devoid of any thought whatsoever. It's not a benefit either. You're a cartoon poster.

Other than the tax thing, there is nothing Arizona can offer that Toronto or any other franchise in the league cannot. Endorsements are not that city dependent anymore

It can't be something that is very convenient for them though which could add pressure to JG to move somewhere where it's easier for his family to be part of that.

Like I said, what do you contribute besides posts like this? Go ahead folks, look at his posting history and explain to me how in the hell this guy is still here? Anyhow I am done with this off topic crap, I will continue to post my belief that the whole go East narrative is just bs cooked up by Eric Francis for clicks and the man truly wants to be here. If others want to play that narrative that is fine, they are welcome to it as well.

Go ahead folks!

People are bored of your toxic positivity. Pack it in.

Zero chance of that. Unless the really want him to walk, which they don't. Johnny will get maximum term wherever he goes.

Blame the mayor for killing the arena deal if he doesn't sign

Maybe they didn't like it that much? Maybe that's a reason why Johnny is conflicted. His wife was here with him this season. Maybe she didn't like it that much? Maybe she felt homesick?

At the end of the day we don't know any of the answers to those questions.

I think all we know is that Johnny has enjoyed his time in Calgary, his teammates and the Calgary Flames management. But there is considerably more than that.

I don't think that would be the reason. I think what might be taking a while is the other things that come with a contract, not term or money. How is the contract structured bonus wise? What years are a NMC, are some near the end a NTC? What other stipulations does the player want or the team want? These are the things that drag out the process imo. Both sides will draw this out to get those additional things but I still have no doubt it will get done.

The arena deal was killed by rising costs.
