Oof that sucks. Backstroms a major piece in Washington. Can't help but wonder how many goals this is gonna cost OV on his run for the record.
Hope he can come back but I don't know if he can at his age.
Best of luck Backstrom.

One of the most underrated players I've ever watched, killer playmaker

I didn't consistently watch the Caps but when I did, it seemed like Kuznetsov might have been OV's center this season and Backstrom was on line 2 with Oshie. They were probably still together on PP1 though.

We have a Sean Monahan that would make a nice fill in for him.

We could use a Sean Monahan also. But no one needs the current version, whether it be us or Washington. He wasn't even a particularly good 4th liner last year.
Now if he proves himself healthy and production (admittedly two huge ifs), both teams would want him, but Calgary would have little reason to move him then.
Plus Washington will need to fill this hole before the season starts.

Sean Monahan has similar issue and is a much worse player……

Major hole in the Caps lineup, though gives the Caps an option to go after Mallon in free agency ( if he doesn’t re-sign in Pittsburgh)

I assume he's heading into LTIRement which will free up $9.2 million a season for the next three years for the Caps. Was a really good playmaker throughout his career and a point a game over 1000 games is very solid in this day and age.

Draft Pick
|
Canucks Army is reporting that a J.T. Miller trade to Washington has now become top priority as Miller can play center and wing. Problem is Washington doesn't have the assets Vancouver is looking for (RHD) but they suggest a creative package is another option. CA went on to mention that Philly will also be seeking a player with Miller's skills and do have the assets/picks to trade.

Plus if paried with Lucic, he gives the Flames the opportunity to ice a $12M AAV 4th line.

No. If Johnny played centre, possibly.

Kuznetsov could conceivably play 1C, Ovi changes over to RW and Johnny plays LW. Then they switch on the PP.
