Holy crap, I just had a grizzly encounter in Canmore! I have a pic, but it's from kinda far away. My daughter has a video from when we were closer. Surprisingly, I didn't lose my ####. I was just more worried about keeping my kids safe. Had to unholster my bearspray. I'm a little uncomfortable with the word hero, but I suppose most heroes are.

After the first few they get far less exciting. Good work staying calm.

You get all the cookies!

Yeah, the snow is so low this year the grizzlies are in town. The Canadian National mtb races are this weekend. Every racer has to have bearspray or they are disqualified. Also they needed way more volunteers because they want everyone within site. Which means the volunteer staff will have to be 10 times what it normally is. I've marshalled quite a few races out there before and lots of times you just sit by yourself by a trail. Especially in the beginning before the racers spread out.

Yeah there’s a few in town. Good on ya to keep your bearings. Saw one at the Catholic school across the soccer field. And sadly appears to be an adolescent that won’t leave Cougar Ridge, that Parks is trying to trap,
Since last year I've been able to get up relatively close with a number of bears. Observed a couple families. And two this season so far.
They have such personalities, would play and tussle like your house pets, show a child-like curiosity and scavenge for berries and other things while coming across completely harmless and uninterested in people that keep their distance.
When you actually watch them, without your overwhelming fear distorting your thoughts, you realize that they're animals, not murder machines.
Their primary motivations are to survive and care for their young. Not to chase and mutilate hikers/campers.
Also consider that ecosystems need primary predators. They fulfill a key role. They help maintain populations of animals below them and when they perish, their remains are broken down and feed the lowest organisms on the chain to begin the cycle again.
You don't just disrupt the entire ecosystem/cycle that has kept everything in balance because it inconveniences people, and less so just because a handful have overwhelming fears stemming from news headlines about rare, freak events, who haven't come to terms with the truth that these are harmless animals just going about their business the other 99.9% of the time.
Comments like the OP prove that humans are the truly frightening species here, and that bears have every right to feel the security of their cubs is threatened when people are near. As a mammal I too would be afraid of these calculating, tool weilding beings that (some of which) want to eradicate me and my kind just for being.

Yeah this was right by the Stewart Creek Golf Course. Decided to do my workout indoors after the encounter. Hopefully Parks will be able to safely euthanize it.

It’s probably the same one along Armstrong and Stewart Creek, that we’ve seen. That one for now, doesn’t seem to be getting Parks after it.
I've encountered four black bears in the last week while walking in the Okanagan. One encounter was not fun as I came across two bears that seemed to either be involved in a tussle or in mating. Was going along a bit of single track on a steep slope and thought I was hearing atv engines or something in the distance around the bend in front of me, but it turned out it was the noise of these two bears who then came around the bend facing right towards me about thirty feet away with a lot of huffing. The bigger one had its head down and was staring straight at me huffing a lot and then just took its first steps to charge at me when I blew my air horn at it, which stopped it, and then blew three more times which caused it to decide to walk away.
The other interactions I had were all totally peaceful and non-confrontational, but that one interaction was certainly an adrenaline rush.

I didn't know what the hell this thread was, so I went to the first page... it was an amusing mix of permanent bans, and posters that were very active when I was a lurker and not a poster, but now have drifted into the ether.

You don't need to be faster than the bear. You just have to be faster than the slowest person that you are with.
ha - anytime there has been a bear sighting in our area and my wife wanted to go for a walk she'd ask if i was worried about a bear and i'd always tell that i wasn't worried at all becuz i could run waaaaaay faster than her - she never found that as funny as i did!
