City briefing underway right now, they are still watching for that rain coming on Sunday-Monday to possibly raise flow rates. They are going to open up a couple of lanes on Memorial with a temporary opening in the berm.
Berm cost was $115,000 and protecting ~$53M in property.

They should leave the berm in place and open the lanes to 4x4 traffic only.

You're just short-sighted. If we flood Sunnyside then all of the surrounding property becomes 'Lakeside!'
Profit!
Also...we can sell it as a tourist destination for Scuba Divers to go and see The Sunken Latte District!
Win/Win/Win!

Now you're thinking like a 1980s movie supervillain. I like it.

Have you looked at the price of fuel lately! 115 sounds like a bargain. Lol

Yeah, I dont know particularly how I feel about the cost versus benefit. In the grand scheme of things $115K isnt all that bad, and the experience of getting it built so fast does have value.
I do think people forget how quickly things went south last time, so knowing that you can get a berm built in a couple hours is good to have.

That 115k may also include setting up all the shiny new water pumps I was seeing everywhere. Definitely a good "dry" run.

According to our local neighbourhood flood master the improvements on the south bank of the river and downstream have actually reduced our protection level with the existing berm (work is underway to build this up, but it could still be a few years out).
In 2013 the peak flow was around 1840m3/s and it did just breach the berm around 3rd street and a little east. Now a flow rate of around 1200m3/s is the max it can handle before being breached. So not great.

The fact that there exists such a being as 'The Sunnyside Floodmaster' makes me want to flood Sunnyside even more.
I hope he wears a goofy helmet and carries a Trident.
"Oh. There goes Floodmaster Fred again."

Be careful, with his knowledge of city storm water and sanitary pipes he could take offense to your comments and simply appear inside your home with no warning.
