After watching a little of the inconsistency this year, I'm not entirely convinced they should be going all in this year. There needs to be a little bit more plate discipline from the team to be a playoff contender. Having said that, I don't think our friend Biggio will amount to his potential. His confidence is zero. I do believe Pearson when back can be a rotation guy or the very least bullpen, so it gives me hope the pitching situation is sorted out. When it comes to catching, it's super interesting as there is a role for everyone, there are holes by all three:
- Kirk - great hitting, mediocre defence, slow runner. Best suited for DH/C combo
- Jansen - turning to a very good hitter, decent defence, can't stay healthy, still a prime age
- Moreno - high upside in getting on base like Bichette, good defence, but still inexperienced
What does it all mean? You can have your cake and eat it too only if you keep all three guys and use all three in different situations. Moreno is the future but you can't rush him, so to me, this season I don't trade any. I play Kirk/Moreno at C, and the odd day Kirk at DH. When Jansen comes back Kirk rolls to DH, and Jansen and Moreno split time. But if Jansen feels slighted this year, perhaps this year Moreno gets kept in the minors and next year there's more of a 50/50 split between Moreno/Jansen.
The only two players who probably don't have any role are Tapia and Biggio. So dealing them to get solid hitters is probably required. Biggio could probably get a vet on a last year, and we'd be selling low. Tapia I've seen enough to just say cut ties. He's in the same ilk as Grichuk. I just don't like them as they're good for nothing. Part of being a pro athlete is consistency, and not one off games. Tapia is consistently bad where I don't see an ounce of upside.

Can someone please explain to me why in a blow out game yesterday Montoyo uses Cimber, then in a close game today he uses Richards?
Richards has been so bad this year that if they aren't going to DFA him they should at least only use him in lop sided games.
I just don't get it.

Charlie is an enigma.
On the other hand though, in a corporation where millions are on the line with every decision, I have zero doubts management is comfortable behind the scenes through ongoing dialogue and statistics on every decision. Many things I see are puzzling, but there's no way it's not sanctioned from above.

Tapia and Zimmer aren't being used properly. They should be a threat to run every time they're on base. For example, last night when Zimmer came on to pinch run, he should be off right away. There's no way he should be the lead out on a force play leaving the slower runner (Kirk) on first. They need to run, if not to steal bases, to move the defense around.
Also the problem with pinch running for Moreno is that now you can't pinch run for Kirk. Why pinch run Zimmer for Moreno if he's not going to steal? Moreno can do that (not steal). You might also need Moreno's bat in extra innings.
What I would have done was leave Moreno in and bring Kirk in to pinch hit. If Kirk gets on, he's the go ahead run, pinch run Zimmer for Kirk. If Kirk doesn't get on you have the choice to bring in Zimmer as a defensive replacement for Moreno or Kirk. Or if Kirk advanced Moreno, you could pinch run Zimmer for Moreno at 2nd base with 2 outs, but that's iffy too.

I imagine the idea was that Zimmer could score from first on a single, which Kirk is quite good at these day, but ended up with a grounder. One could argue that Zimmer's speed helped prevent a double play.

I disagree on Biggio. They showed his stats on a recent broadcast since he came back from his AAA stint and in that time he's been hitting over .300 with a pretty high walk rate putting his OBP over .400. The AAA stint did wonders for his confidence and he's been getting clutch hits and walks for weeks now.

I added a bit more to my post. the ball was hit so slow i don't think it could be a double play. And Kirk isn't that slow, he just looks slow!

This just it, I'm glad someone else noticed it.
With Biggio you get have a valuable asset. He's a super utility player who can fill in anywhere in the field except catcher. He also gets on base. It's not super sexy when you do it with a low avg. and OPS, but he still gets on base. It's better than having a black hole at the bottom of your lineup that doesn't do anything with an at bat.
What I'd like to see Biggio work on is situational hitting: hit and run, bunting, sac flies. I think that, coupled with his ability to work a count, should be his niche. He may never be a star, but guys like that have long and fruitful careers because they do so many little things well.

When I see Kirk run I'm reminded of a quote from Patton Oswald describing how he looks when he runs:
"Just an anthropomorphic pot of noodles chugging down the street. 'Ahhhh, friendship!'"
That's Kirk. He's an anthropomorphic pot of noodles.
