there was something on the athletic indicating that the bruins management felt he did not handle the young players very well and his style was hard on them.

Darryl Sutter is pretty hard on young players. At the end of the day it's all about winning and the results speak for themselves. I get that he was maybe pushing the players harder than they liked but I don't think you fire him until the performance of the team slides and that's not the case here.

Wonder if the Bruins see the writing on the wall and are going for a quick re-tool for Bedard/Michkov. Would be a smart move with Marchand, MacAvoy, Bergeron out/uncertain for most of the season.

Yeah have to wonder if they think doing this might make it more likely that Bergeron and Krecji come back.
Funny part is I could see them bringing Julien back too.

Little chance they could fall low enough next season to have realistic odds of drafting top 2 next season. Those types of decisions have to be made years in advance.

Ideally yes, but they seem to be taking advantage of a fluid situation re: their injuries and retirements.
Apparently they're also exploring trading Pastrnak. Suggests the intent to retool/rebuild. If they manage to trade Pastrnak on top of their injuries and other trades, I don't see how they don't have a good shot at a high pick in an excellent year to have a good shot at a high pick.
Example of decisive, proactive management I'd say.

I remember the year Joe Thornton was available, they after making the playoff twenty some consecutive years to all of a sudden tank to last overall. Then of course at that time, last in the league draft first overall guarantee. But now with the lottery system and with all those bad teams, Arizona, Seattle, Philadelphia, New Jersey etc, they can finish last overall, and with the lottery system it's all about luck.

I remember when Cassidy came in, and as a Bruins fan, and my father in law is a die hard Bruins fan, Cassidy changed the way Boston played to a high tempo game focused on quick north-south transition. I remember it so well because Cassidy was maybe a year in or so and they were excellent, and Calgary struggled with them one day. Soon thereafter the Flames hired Peters and he used a very similar style. Sutter does too now; you kinda have to to compete in todays NHL. Your team has to (generally) move the puck very fast and the passing has to be accurate and the whole unit has to be transitioning quickly. Specifically your D needs to frequently activate and skate and pass like a F, (at least one of them).
I think guys like Marchand, Bergeron and Pastrnak were stars (are stars) or were always going to be stars. But what he did with guys like McAvoy, Coyle, Debrusk, Haula, hell even Taylor Hall- Cassidy is a great coach.
I remember specifically a guy like Debrusk, all pouty about not getting icetime, even demanding a trade. Apparently Cassidy brought him aside and had a long one on one with him. Debrusk was upset he wasn’t being deployed more and said that was why he was ineffective. What does Cassidy do? Listens to him. Starts using him on lines 1/2 this season, and Debrusk delivers. A lot of coaches wouldn’t do this, they would let their ego get in the way. Whatever happened in that convo, sparked Debrusk massively and he was truly great this season.
Cassidy wasn’t Bostons problem. The players just aren’t good enough, and their stars / first line can’t compete with the likes of at least 3 teams in their division. So this seems like a silly thing to do to me.

When you like the head coach but the players don't it puts the GM in a difficult situation. If a guy like Pastrnak or other key players tells the GM he won't re-sign with the Bruins if the head coach remains it's something that has to be addressed one way or another. This organization was always staring at decline given the age of their best players and uncertainty of how many will be back in the next two seasons and letting Cassidy go will likely accelerate that unless they can replace him with a guy like Trotz who may be able to squeeze the roster for one or two more good seasons.

If any of that is true it ; Neely probably told Sweeney if you want to keep your job, fire Cassidy.
@MurphysLaw74:
This is just my opinion (could be wrong) based on all I've learned via Bruce Cassidy just now, and other sources:
Cassidy got railroaded by Cam Neely. Sweeney fought to keep Cassidy as #NHLBruins head coach after Neely's end of season comments, but Neely said no.

Why would a player EVER get a say in who the GM is? Hurry Sweeney trade him to the Flames.

I think McDavid had a say before he was drafted. The Oilers won the lottery and his agent met with Oilers brass because they had concerns about being drafted to the seemingly aimless franchise. Soon thereafter the GM and Coach were changed.
I think Mario Lemieux got to have a say.... but that's completely different story.

Sweeney's drafting has been abysmal, but he's made a couple of solid trades. Not sure who actually pulls the strings there.
