If years of watching TV and film has taught me anything, it’s that if two characters have a heartfelt conversation about leaving after one last job something bad is about to happen.

Episode 4 was so good. With all the twists, reveals, and crazy action that could have been a season final.

Think A-Train actually spilled the beans? At first I thought he did but then they made a big point about Homelander hearing private conversations and A-Train looking like he's on a redemption path. Homelander just saying it was A-Train to stop them from working together?

Definitely seemed odd to me. I wouldn't exactly call it a redemption path, A-train is still doing those Jenner Pepsi ads and exploiting black suffering for his own gain. Both Deep and A-Train seem to be faking redemption for their own personal gain.

A-Train also seemed like he was genuinely out to get Homelander. It's possible that he has his own angle in helping Homelander, but he has to realize that Homelander would kill/fire him without a second thought at this point, even after receiving the intel.

Homelander must know that everyone is out to get him at this point, and should be listening to private conversations. They made a point of emphasizing that as one of Homelander's powers, so it's definitely likely Homelander's been doing that.

I think A-Train is far and away the best candidate for a redemption arc.

He's already started worrying about his community, which is a big step forward for him.

Not sure that's really the flavor of the show. It's more like a bunch of dbags who continually screw each other. Huey and Starlight are probably the closest thing to moral characters.

And it kinda feels like Huey is heading for a dark turn. He was much more intrigued by his powers than he was concerned for Kimiko.

Seemed like Huey and Butcher were getting addicted to the V24 if anything. Maybe that was an intended side effect Vought was putting in as an insurance policy.

I wonder how they're going to do the Herogasm story... I mean I know they're not doing one scene from the comic but they're gonna have to get pretty darn close to pornography on the scale they've established so far.

There's no way they're doing that.

The Boys showrunner explains one 'Herogasm' moment they didn't do

It's Herogasm in name only.

Well I do like and appreciate that they're maintaining focus on the story. I dont really care about this event unless it serves the story somehow.

I think it’s because he’s so use to the hero-celebrity worship and thinking he’s amazing and great while being surrounded by yes-men and having his career carefully crafted by Vought that he’s just so out of touch. Would almost be hard not to be when you run through someone while high on V, but get commendation for stopping a bank heist instead of manslaughter charges. Jenner probably also thought she was making some profound comment with her commercial.

But when his family and friends laughed at his suit and brought up the real issue, that racist cop hero, he did bring it up during the Seven meeting and it was quite obvious that him speaking up was out of character like that.

I think he wants to be a hero and thought following Vought was the right choice, but the nazi Stormfront and his slowing down got him kicked out and he’s having a bit of coming-to-Jesus moment of what it really means to be a hero.

Also from outside the world of The Boys and the social commentary it’s been making, I think making the one Black hero an Uncle Tom by the end would be an issue (forgot about Black Noir and Mother’s Milk being one of the goodest good guys might give more leeway). And from an entertainment point of view, I bet they are hoping that A-Train can end up being a Jaimie Lannister type character where fans can’t believe the guy who started all this by running through Hughie’s girlfriend becomes a fan favourite.

I also think The Deep is a far tougher sell. Both have done terrible things but The Deep is a huge sexual predator and a real redemption arc for him would be pushing it.

I think they need to keep him as a comical dumb character with misfortunes that we can laugh/squeal/cringe at, like gill-rape, dolphin and whale deaths and Timothy, while staying just enough of an ####### that some schadenfreude is deserved but pushing it to still be uncomfortable. I could see Homelander ####ing his wife in front of him next.

So maybe an in-world “redemption” for The Deep where he retires/dies a hero to the masses but viewers know he’s still just a selfish deplorable ####### while A-Train actually does redeem himself to viewers but ends up being a has been in-universe would be a good juxtaposition.

While I’m certainly getting ahead of myself, I might also just have to realize that in The Boys maybe everyone is #######s.

Also forgot that that Black Noir was revealed to be Black and wanted to stop wearing the mask. Maybe he gets an arc that seemed to be going to A-Train instead.

Huge departure from the comic book. Black Noir's real identity... pretty huge plot defining deal in the comics.

I am starting to come around in the A Train redemption arc. He's definitely slowly looking like less on an ass and more sympathetic. I also have a feeling that he'll just get snuffed out by Homelander too.

Really?

I'm with you on the 'Redemption Arc' but I just feel its going to be more along the lines of having to step in at some unavoidable point and his heart exploding. A sacrificial act.

Granted, thats just a guess. A-Train wouldnt stand a chance against Homelander anyways so thats not really tense.

Who's strong enough to just grab Maive like that? Was it Black Noir? Also, I'm not so sure "suicide by Homelander" is a fun way to go out, but I guess there aren't many other things that can kill her...

It was Black Noir. Still super curious what his deal is here.

Pretty tame episode by their standards. The Rogan cameo was great though.

Yeah Black Noir must definitely have his own agenda. Given his backstory, I can't see him being very pro Vought. He could just be a straight up psycho, only it for the chance to kill. The Rogan cameo was amazing. So great to see someone of that status who just doesn't give an F.
