Every time the Habs have drafted first overall post-expansion (the pre-expansion drafts were generally minor because so many players were already controlled by teams under the sponsorship system): - 1968 (French-Canadian priority) - Lost Final in 1967, Won Cup in 1968
- 1969 (French-Canadian priority) - Won Cup in 1968, Won Cup in 1969
- 1971 (Trade with California, May 1970) - Missed playoffs in 1970, Won Cup in 1971
- 1980 (Trade with Colorado, September 1976) - Won Cup in 1979, Lost second round in 1980
- 2022 - Lost Final in 2021, Missed playoffs in 2022
Also, every time the Habs have drafted first overall, the draft was (or will be) held in Montreal (every draft until 1984 was in Montreal).

Damn I just noticed that some of these prospects were born during the '04 Cup run. (It also dawns on me more time has passed since that run than elapsed between 1989 and 2004).
Time for another Flames Cup run, I say!

Absolutely disgusting that the Devils somehow luck their way into the top 1-2
East Coast oilers imo

I'm so old I remember the last Habs 1OA pick and how mad their fans were that they took Wickenheiser over Denis Savard (they didn't care about missing out on Dave Babych).
Savard had just destroyed the Q, was French, and fit their style (can you imagine him between Lafleur and Shutt). Wickenheiser was bigger, but at 6'1" he wasn't a monster. Savard went PPG as a rookie (and no doubt helped Sutter to 40 goals).

Have the oilers launched a full investigation into why they didn't get first overall yet? I mean this is a travesty for them!

They are due to get it next year when the next generational player comes along.
Either them or the Penguins.

or time for a quick dip year by the Lightning or Aves (the latter seems particularly improbable but...)

Reminds me of 2013, in which they picked 1st and 3rd respectively, with both teams tanking hard at the end of the season. They then quickly rebounded.

If Wright will do the right thing and refuse to go to Quebec like what Lindros did, maybe...

time to start looking at draft reports on players in the 45-65 range on ranking lists to look for candidates for the second round pick.
https://theathletic.com/3306659/2022...pects-ranking/
These are three that I would be looking into more for a late second round pick
43. Jordan Gustafson — C, Seattle Thunderbirds, 5-foot-11
53. Owen Pickering — LHD, Swift Current Broncos, 6-foot-4
62. Vinzenz Rohrer — C/RW, Ottawa 67’s, 5-foot-10

Not having a 1st sucks.
I hope we can somehow find a way to get into the early first round, but likely doesn't happen unless a big fish moves.

I would be really happy with Owen Pickering, I just think he'll be picked by then...maybe even in the first.

Sometimes, for whatever reason, the Flames draft better when they do not have a 1st round pick.
In 2010 they still got Ferland in the 5th. In 2015, they got Andersson, Kylington, and Mangiapane. 2018 is looking a little weaker, but I wouldn't say it was a bad draft by the Flames.

Fair, I just don't find the draft as "fun" if you're not somehow in the first round.
Purely hype related, but this years class is looking pretty strong in the top 10 and next year even more so.

If Gaudreau doesn't sign, I'd be curious if we see the flames move some guys for picks this/next draft. If he goes, the remaining core (which could also not include tkachuk) suddenly doesn't have a real winning window for 2-3 years. In which case, they might as well try to move guys that don't fit that time frame. Of course, that's never been the flames way, especially with Sutter still having a year left.

FWIW Lindros refused the city, not the province.
Would be comical though.
Owen Beck is now rated ~10th. That's unfortunate.
