12 months? That's very difficult, I think you have to look further.

Stopping or at least slowing the flow of legal firearms into hands of citizens is obviously number one, as that supply becomes a major part of the illegal gun numbers as well.

And then like MaritimeScout said, you need to move into a major buyback program.

These two things aren't going to change things overnight. But if the bathtub is overflowing, turn off the faucet and then start dealing with the overflow.

The difficulty for the pro gun side is the advent of social media is going to ramp up the frequency and horror of these events, there is an element of one upmanship and self promotion now, in the same way back in the 90's kids would compete to get into the most spectacular stolen car chases on a Friday afternoon in LA, they knew the news choppers were up and would follow them, now we have instagram doing the same job

That is because Republican Presidents would never do a press conference talking about how they are sick and tired about taking about kids or adults being slaughtered. For Republicans that is a time for thoughts and prayers (and now door control). So different messaging, but it is not because the shootings did not take place.

The vast majority of illegal guns aren't created in the North Pole by Santa Claus who then gives them to all the naughty boys and girls. They start out as legal guns somewhere along the line and are stolen/sold (and likely altered) and become illegal guns. If you reduce the amount of legal guns - you will in turn reduce the amount of illegal guns.

Thank you PeteMoss. 99% of these guns start out as legal firearms. Along the way they're stolen, illegally sold, etc. and suddenly there's nothing we can do about it because they're illegal guns. Make legal guns more difficult to purchase and we can start reducing the amount of illegal guns.

It's a drop in the bucket at this point because of how many guns are out there but it's a start.

I dont recall one mass shooting story during the Trump term or even Bush Jr.

I mean, I know there were mass shootings during their terms but they didn't dominate the news cycle like they do during Democrats presidential terms. Simply because of all the massive hand waving and jedi mind tricks the Trump and bush Jr terms had. George Floyd, 9/11, WMD Iraq.

For Junior Bush there was the Virginia Tech shooting which was all over the news. Headline mass shootings for Trump that come to mind are the Pittsburgh synagogue and Santa Fe High school shootings.

It is getting worse. I think they’re averaging more than one mass shooting a day now (depending how you define it) and every incident incites more crazies. I hate to think what it will be like in months and years if the U.S. doesn’t do something about firearms.

The Parkland shooting was also during Trump, and made massive headlines. It also inspired the March for Our Lives movement.

The one thing I'll say, regardless of guns, is is anybody asking the question of "Why?"

Why is this happening so frequently? It's not like the gun or the availability of guns causes people to go on a shooting rampage?

I'm really interested in the root cause of this systemic issue in the U.S.

Now, I guess we have to be really careful since we can't talk about the U.S. as a contiguous nation when it comes to gun laws, cultural, or socio-economic factors, but I'd love to hear some theories on why this is an issue in the U.S.

You can't start the question by dismissing the answer. It's guns (and also a hyper individualistic society that doesn't give a crap about anyone but the rich, but mostly guns).
