Now over. The rats scurried out as questions started to get tougher.
One other thing said was “bylaws state one alumni is one player on board” but never named that person.
Bontis said that if they could only deal with WNT and MNT they still couldn’t afford the proposal? Wtf. The CSA got a pile of money for qualifying and hosting. That’s in addition tot the budget.
Sharman on now on OneSoccer.
Ian Hume on there too, and actually cutting into the CSA. Good.
Wheeler is on OneSoccer too, and now coming to full defense of CSB and wondering why it’s being brought up now.
Geez maybe because it’s never been brought up by anyone before, as the agreement, and the terms of the agreement, took the players and most in the media by surprise? And they are effectively a private business running the finances of an association which is to be independent and just signed that 4 years ago.
For me, neither side come out of this looking great.
The CSA gets no sympathy from me at all given their track record over the last few decades, and their complete inability with how to deal with the exponential interest in the game in this country over the last year. Get rid of them all, especially that used car salesman Bontis.
The players get more sympathy from me than the CSA, but it's not a lot. To pull the plug on this friendly when supporters spent significant sums of money isn't a great look; if they really cared about the supporters who got behind them they would have played the game. It's about money, plain and simple, something these particular players do not lack. I do think their demands are reasonable, but they pissed off a lot of people today with their decision to bail on the game.
As for the CSB deal mentioned, it was a deal struck with the CSA for the commercial interests and broadcast rights to the national teams, as well as the group of owners behind the CPL. It is based on the structure in the US (SUM) where the owners of MLS also own commercial interests and broadcast rights to their national teams. The main difference between the two is simply the amount of revenue coming in; CSB gets but a fraction what SUM gets, and the Canadian players want a similar arrangement that their American counterparts get but there isn't the kind of money available to pull it off.
What people may not realize is that CSB invested 9 figures into the men's professional game and national teams at a time when no one gave a ####. Without them, there is no CPL, no Cavalry, there are no new sponsorships for the national team, and this window's games are being broadcast on a Youtube stream with a handheld camera. The deal's relevance on this World Cup run is minimal to nonexistant, but the relevance towards the long term sustainability of the professional game and national teams is critical. Albeit, they would have still had their deal with Umbro and I could have gotten a customized jersey for $100 which I miss.
I think the saddest thing about this situation is simply that most people just don't care, and the end result of today is that some people who just got into the sport are going to go back to not caring.
Okay, back to your ranting Browna.

Nothing is one size fits all of course, but can’t they consult with other national associations on how they handle the commercial side of operations?
I suppose if there is a will there is a way, but I get the feeling there isn’t much will at the CSA. They are content with being a corrupt organization with no intention of growing.
Bontis and Earl said that this was the first chance to meet face to face to discuss this since the March window… pick up the damn phone. Have a zoom call. Anything. You literally had months to have a dialogue and it was left until the last minute on the eve of a friendly.
Pure incompetence from the CSA. Maybe the players are completely out to lunch with their demands. So let’s just leave it a few months and we’ll just shoot down their demands in person right before we play Iran/Panama. What could go wrong?

Sure, glad the CPL and I guess, via the, CSB, exisits…but why does the CSA have to jump into bed with them and cede financial (which is basically overall control) control of the CSA?
The startup of CPL didn’t need that CSA relationship, those owners of the CPL started that up, as well as OneSoccer, on their own. CPL would exist regardless of a CSA relationship.
And, this is the first public acknowledgement as to the extent and ramifications and restrictions to the CSA itself, of the deal signed 4 years ago.
Basically the CSA has been given an allowance now to spend, and all CSA revenues, including WC related revenue come to the CSB. So, the CSA doesn’t have any more to give in this case or any future cases, the CSB has to be asked to and decide to give it. Again, this is news to the players and general public, it sounds like.

Players said in the letter that the CSA has said people were on vacation the last month or two.
Bontis said there was one alumni on the board as is mandated by CSA bylaws.
Well, guess he was right. 36 year old Brittney Timko.

Sums it up right there. I don’t begrudge anyone from holidaying and having a break, but this seems like a strange thing to ignore entirely for a few months, and then act surprised when it comes home to roost.
Any question whether Bob Young (Scott Mitchell, head of Canada Soccer Buinsess, is CEO of Bob Young’s Canadian businesses) has influence over the CSA can go out the window now, given the knowledge of the influence that the CSB wields over the CSA.
Borges rescinded yellow card by the CSA before the return match of the CPL Championship? The 4 month CSA investigation into a racial remark made by a Forge staff member?
Just watched the press conference and uh....that was so bad. I didn't have much sympathy for the players going into it but I have a lot more now.
The CSB deal is important to the sustainability of the game in this country long term and that shouldn't be forgotten, but damn, just no accountability from the CSA here.

They had a contrived "2020 Championship Game" played yesterday, June 4 2022. Purely so Bob Young could get TFC to play Forge in Hamilton.

I think your questions are at the heart of the issue that we are trying to find out. I just wanted to provide some context as to who CSB were. For me, they are simply the people who invested in the sport in this country and should not be vilified.
Oddly enough, the deal was celebrated by Canada Soccer 4 years ago, so I think the about face on how that deal now suddenly handcuffs them is laughable.

Yeah not villifying them per se, moreso the CSA for ceding so much control over money which has got us to this point. Again, the CSA is crying about their $25M budget, which they couldn't grow because of incompetence, but there is more money now, they just can't access it becuase of this deal.
And now you're left with a national governing body with little control over financial and business matters, which given the CSA's track record, is not necessarily bad thing, but the CSB is a for profit entity and the people that run that now, in 5 years and in 10 years, now have the controls over everything under the CSA, so that can also be a slippery slope for power and influence with no checks in place. But day to day the CSA still makes the decisions or lack of decisions when it comes to various NT things all the way down to grass roots, they just have a sugar daddy propping them up.

Instead, they are airing dirty laundry and pointing fingers at one another and remember that you are on the same side here.
We should have been watching a friendly, not a press conference on who is to blame...
The team made it in spite of obstacles of the CSA and in full part thanks to Herdman, and a global pandemic which reset qualifying, becuase they weren't going to make it under the old system. That decision can also be attributed to a Canadian as current CONCACAF president.
This had to come to light and change and if it took a friendly match against a nobody forefit to do it, fine for long term.
Easy path forward here is that the CSB will step up with some extra money and the CSA will pat them and themselves on the back.
Watched a bit of the presser back again and Bontis is exactly the type.of arrgoant, slimy spin doctor that's been the prevailing attitude at the CSA for decades, which is why nothing gets done or done half-assed.
