The Oilers with Kane on their team during the regular season had basically the same record as Flames

This wasn’t some massive collapse by a favourite

Maybe just keep Lucic and Monahan. Sign Gaudreau, and keep one of Tkachuk/Mangiapane. Use AHL/replacement players to fill out the rest of the roster.

If one of them gets offer sheeted, take the picks.

We spent a lot of picks on Toffoli, Jarnkrok, Carpenter, Vladar, Pitlick, Zadorov, etc. There’s an argument to be made that replenishing those is more important than continuing to spend futures.

A suggestion.

Crazy how quickly it all ended. Felt like just the other day it was Flamesmania in the Beltline every 2nd day, and Flames up 1-0 in the series and out to an early 2-0 lead in game 2. Hard to believe they never won again after that.

I still see the giant Flames flag whenever I leave Repsol, kind of a bummer now. That was a super fun time downtown, so much buzz, sad it didn't go longer.

I thought they said on Saturday that Sutter would be addressing the media on Monday? Obviously that didn’t happen. I wonder why we haven’t heard from Big D yet?

1. Sign Gaudreau, if he does not resign you might as well trade everything that isn't bolted down and rebuild/re-tool.

2. If you can re-sign Gaudreau: Balance the roster. This is about the fourth off-season in a row where the Flames have to find at least a top 6, preferably top line, C. If they fail once again to find a top C, even with Gaudreau signed, they won't get much further. To do so,

3. Trade Tkachuk for assets to acquire a top C. Clear out cap (Monahan LTIRetirement? Lucic retirement?)

4. Trade Hanifin for a LHD who doesn't melt down at the first hint of pressure. These stats are just ugly. Hanifin was the worst rush defender in the playoffs for the second round. Does Boston want him for Lindholm+?

If this can occur, the rest becomes much easier.

LTIR becomes much harder to establish when an insurance company is footing the bill (or at least some of it), as is likely with Monny. Especially when the reports are that Monny should be good to go by the start of the season. People point to Kutcherov, but he had a serious legitimate injury, the questionable part was whether he could have returned before the playoffs began.

With respect to Lucic, the question is whether he actually wants to retire. He sure looks like a guy having fun playing. But who knows what's he thinking.

PR website says there’s a media availability tomorrow. Might be him.

Unless he has the worst botched surgery in the history or professional sports, MONAHAN IS NOT RETIRING.

Game 6 would’ve been the same…if Oilers beat themselves or get a bad bounce as the Flames did, it would be Game 7 tonight with a confident Flames team and a crumbling Oilers team.
I think had the Flames won game 5, the Oilers would’ve come back and won game 6 as I don’t think momentum carries over game to game, almost the opposite sometimes.

The Flames had no answer, absolutely zero answer for Draisaitl, McDavid and that RNH line. You can’t win a series if you’re giving up an average of 3 points per game to one guy. The team defense and checking was abysmal in the series to go along with the poor goaltending. I give credit to Woodcroft and his Oilers, they wanted it more.

Yeah, the eye test on Hanifin has me done with him.

To me he was invisible in the regular season in a good way. I'd be lucky to even notice him during any game (good and bad).

But when the pressure was applied it was too much.

I'd say he is our biggest chip but with Zadorov Gudbranson uncertainty, and Kylington still with his flaws I don't see how you get away from him.

Yeah I've never been a fan of his. His offensive game is pretty overrated and his work in the defensive zone leaves a lot to be desired. I know he's only 25, but it's not like he learned much from the Dallas series. He repeated the same mistakes in the next series against the Oilers.

Draisaitl absolutely ran roughshod over the Flames because the defense was way too soft and easy to play against. The team needs to improve in this regard. Gotta got tougher, more poised, need guys who can absorb contact and make plays under duress and guys who can box out in front of the net.

Sooo, sign Zadorov, trade Hanifin? Would be ballsy but I wouldn’t be against it.

Also, from an asset management position, sign free player, trade one for assets rather than losing one for free.

Flames franchise has to decide if they want to be a playoff riff Raff team or try to start over and build a cup contender...

The series clinching goal was the epitome of guys that just won't ever win. Hanifan's fluff pass was ridiculous but gaudreau's fly by was disgusting.

I'm 40, was 7 watching the flames win a cup... This franchise isn't even close. Start this rebuild now, could take a decade but better this decade than next

No, not tough in the literal sense, more like, willing to take a hit to make a play sense. Zadorov served up more than his fair share of pizzas in the slot. Plus, he'd be way too expensive to re-sign, this team has no cap space.

Off the top of my head, maybe an Ian Cole type (pre-breakout). That guy just always seems to play deep into the playoffs. Has 2 Stanley Cup rings to boot. This organization needs to start focusing on adding players who are built for the playoffs.

EDIT: Not necessarily guys who just happened to play on winning teams, but guys who raise the level of their game and drive their team's success in the playoffs.

More I think, we really need a big C to compete other team. If Tre can trade Tkachuk plus Kylington for potential 2a, 2b Centre for cheap salary I would be so happy.
I think Monahan can play LW with Lindholm and Johnny.
Then our new big C with Toffoli and Mangi. Backs with Dube and Coleman. And Lucic with Ruzicka and Lewis or AHL promotion.

That would not be ballsy. It would be idiotic. Akin to trading Lindholm to keep Jarncrok. Hanafin had a fantastic regular season getting into double digit goals and 48 points while Zadorov was a sheltered 3rd pairing defenseman. Hanafin is the far, far superior player.

The only reason you trade Hanifin is if you're rebuilding or you got a better replacement in a trade. If they're rebuilding or wanting to shake things up, he's one of their biggest trade chips.
