That dude's entire coaching strategy involves nothing more than throwing McDrai out there every 2nd shift, including giving them the full 2 minutes on every PP. That team has no structure whatsoever. They're a tire fire in their own zone, they have sub-par goaltending, and yet they're magically able to outscore their problems and PP their way to victories. It's terrible hockey, and the games aren't fun when it feels like every shot ends up in the back of the net.
I think the reason they're able to sucker teams into playing that style is because the Oilers' D are so bad that their opponents end up playing way too loose and try to run up the score, which can result in a lot of turnovers going the other way. It gets teams away from their usual structured systems.
Once these a**holes are eliminated, I expect we'll finally see some big boy hockey again with a much tighter and tougher series in the final. I know the league loves these stupid, high scoring pond hockey games, but I assume that most of us here would love to get back to some good old fashioned 3-2 or 4-3 games.

I don’t believe it says “in the offensive zone” but offsides occur “If, during the course of the delayed off-side, any member of the attacking team touches the puck, attempts to gain possession of a loose puck…”
If Makar doesn’t have possession of the puck then he is at least attempting to gain possession, even if he himself is not yet in the offensive zone. According to that line that should trigger the play to be live and Nuke to be offside.

I think the worst part is how many in the media were all over the league last summer for missed calls. They didn't mention the calls/dives he should've been called for, of course.
I've always said I hate the game management/even up calls in the NHL. If one team commits 15 penalties and the other commits 2, so be it. Call it that way. Just because McDavid can skate fast then spins around or dives on some minimal contact doesn't mean it's a penalty.
But it ain't changing. He knows embellishment works. He'll do it for his entire career. He's not stopping.

Reminds me exactly of the 2011 Canucks. Those guys (Sedins, Kesler, Burrows especially) absolutely abused the refs with manipulation of the play and made their living on the PP.

Woodcroft irritated me too until he opened his post-series win presser against us completely unprompted by praising the hell out of the Flames and congratulating us for a great season and playoffs - shouted out Chris Snow, Sutter, Tree, and a handful of players as well. I thought it was big time classy.

These high scoring games are fun, this kind of attitude that hockey is at it's best when it's a low scoring affair or when every team plays a defensively responsible system is the reason why the NHL is a distant fourth in the U.S.

TNT broadcast figured out why it was onside within seconds of the call

The reason why its fourth is because less people play it for obvious reasons
Hockey will never pass basketball, football, baseball
And let's be real it's mostly poor goaltending creating these huge scores in the western games

The only way a play can be offside is if a player has possession (is touching the puck) in the offensive zone while a player is offside. If a player touches the puck in a different zone then it would not be offside.
I would expect that the same interpretation applies to attempting to gain possession, that a pre-requisite is that you are in the proper zone to actually trigger an offside call. It would be a super weird way to read the English language to think that the first part of your quote “any member of the attacking team touches the puck” and say that part you have to be in the offensive zone but then read the very next portion “or attempts to gain possession of a loose puck” and say that part you can be anywhere on the ice.

Honestly, this is all eerily similar to the Flames series.
Flames carry the play. Oilers capitalize on the few chances they get after a fluke or a bounce or a misread. Penalty calls for the Oilers help too.
I'm calling it now. Oilers will probably win this series in 7. Just a bad...bad...bad feeling about how easy it is for the Oilers to score at times. Neither goalie looked good. Carbon copy of our series so far.

IMO he's actually done a brilliant job. Most coaches in the playoffs pull back the reins, asking their players to play tight checking playoff hockey. Panthers tried and couldn't succeed playing that style of hockey. Instead of trying to play a low event style of hockey that doesn't play to the strength of his team, he's just letting them go out and play firewagon hockey and it's worked so far. Flames got caught up trying to play that style of hockey and were easily dispatched and if the Avs don't make corrections in game two I think the Oilers will win this series and get to the Stanley Cup finals. It is annoying that he's smug but the swagger is working to date.

I've been thinking that about this version of the Oilers for a bit now, too.
I hated watching the Canuks and their BS (and get rewarded for it) back then, and I hate watching the Oilers make a joke of the rules here.
A complete lack of professionalism in them. An utter embarrassment to the sport they make their living at, and they should be ashamed of themselves and their actions.
But they just keep Oiler'ing on.

There are a few guys - but to me these Oilers aren't that hateable. For me its more the constant adulation from announcers and media that drives me batty.

Nuh-uh. Colorado looks good in second periods. That has to count for something right?
