Flames scored 21 goals in 5 games...they scored enough
They lost 3 one goal games with .852 goal tending.
D and goaltending were the #1 issues in the series

And guess who took the boneheaded, unnecessary penalty immediately after Toffoli scored the 3-1 goal, giving the Oilers a free PP and the chance to grab momentum back (which they did)?
Tkachuk.
Probably an overstatement to say it was the turning point in the series, but he was pretty much invisible after that.

By game the number of goals were 9 3 1 3 4 (the last one really 5 )
11 total goals in the 4 losses. Top line only accounted for 2 of the 11. A couple more goals from the top line at key times could have completely changed the complexion of the series. Yes D and goaltening were huge issues, but so was the lack of production from the team's top players.

Yes, they were huge issues. Coaching was an issue. The top line was an issue.
They play McDavid, they get scared. You could tell even in Game 1, they have no idea what to do when this guy is bearing down on them. They grip their sticks too tight and make stupid mistakes all over the ice that they just don’t make against other teams.
I think they get this way because they know if Johnny isn’t feeling it that night, they can’t outscore the Oilers. Tkachuk isn’t going to take the game over. Lindholm isn’t.
Like, don’t get me wrong, they’re extremely high quality players. But you’ve never seen either of them take a game over even once the way Gaudreau does on a regular basis.
We need another player who can take a game over. There’s no getting around it. If Calgary had actually won a Stanley Cup this year, they’d be the team with the least high end talent to do it in the cap era. Toss up between them and the 2006 Hurricanes, God’s Team.

That's a little misleading as one was a 9-6 barn burner with an empty netter. They scored 19 in the final 4 wins where we scored 11. So no we didn't score enough. You could take away five or six goals that Markstrom and/or the defense let in and we still didn't score enough to have a different outcome.
Markstrom was not great and also our defence was really, really bad. Not sure why CP keeps making it seem like it has to be one or the other. We failed in two major componenets of a playoff series (defence and goaltending) and didn't have the firepower to outscore those shortcomings.

We were beat by the Oilers in nearly every important facet of the game in that series. Possession is great, but ultimately they had a coach who adjusted after game 1 and tightened things up and their stars were a couple steps above our stars, series over.
Didn't matter that we could cycle the puck and hold onto it much longer than they could, as it's the playoffs and their top players stepped up and did what it takes to put the puck in the net way more than we did.

I wouldn't mind flipping Tkachuk to the Sens for Norris and #7 in the draft. That would free up enough money to sign all of our key guys, gives us a nice 1-2 punch down the middle for years to come and another high end prospect. The Sens can fill their stands with the brothers on their team.

Are there any actual sources that Johnny wants to go to Philly outside of the family/childhood team connection?

I doubt the Sen’s have any intention of moving Norris in any deal, he’s their #1 centre and has proven chemistry with Batherson.
If the brothers want to play together, they could wait a year and get him for free.

Anybody else thought Johnny was kinda signalling good bye by standing directly on the Center ice dot for his salute to the fans before the Flames left the ice. Most of the team salute was between the blue line and bottom of the Center circle. Johnny made a point of going right to the middle on his own.

My gut tells me Johnny is gone.
One positive you can take from that is that means Brad is gone too

It’s all speculation at this point. Gaudreau has played his cards well. I would not be shocked if he intends to test free agency. I do think he and his family have enjoyed being part of the Flames organization but they could easily be looking at this as an opportunity for a new chapter in his career. I can imagine it would be very enticing to play in a market where his family can frequently attend games. His parents are getting up there in age and an 8 year commitment to the Flames may mean missing out on some last years with his father for instance depending on his health.

Not unless he quits lol
Or do GMs usually get canned after 111 point seasons?
I honestly wouldn't blame the guy if he quit because he got offered a GM job in a market that isn't so slanted against him.
Small market Canadian team, outdated arena with nothing new on the horizon, ungrateful fans like you who jump through hoops to blame him lol

If I'm The Flames I give Johnny whatever he wants to stay for the next 8 years. That will take him till he's 36 and there's no reason to believe his play will drop that dramatically in that time to not warrant a hefty contract offer
If I'm Johnny I take the Flames offer to the day after draft day when I can talk to every team and see what I can get in the market. I most definitely wouldn't close the door on the Flames but I've earned this big payday from whoever I choose to go with
As for Tkachuk I'd play hard ball for awhile. If a team offer sheets him depending on the team I'd either sign it or if it was someone like Phoenix I'd let him go there and take there #1 pick next year and hopefully get Bedard. If Johnny isn't here I don't think Tkachuk has the same production. Still be a good player but not as good without Gudreau.

This is just ridiculously bad logic. There is no guarantee at all Tkachuk would be available to them in a year for free. The brothers would like to play together someday but nothing is guaranteed. You think Tkachuk is going to pass on a bigger payday as a free agent to play with his brother? No chance. If he is already there they have a way better chance of retaining him. If you want a player you don't gamble he might be available in a year. Also, Stutzle will be the Sens #1 C of the future, no doubt about that.

Or his parents could move to Calgary seeing how they love the city.

Treliving, and this would be probably on his own accord too, would be tied at very least, to the rest of Sutter's tenure. So hopefully (for Sutter) that means at least another 2 seasons to finish the job he came back to do.
