They were very unlucky head to head against McDavid as a pairing. The game winner last night is a perfect example.
It's a mistake by Hanifin, and a great chance for McDavid - but really that's still a softish goal that you expect to go in maybe 1/20 times.
All those chances went in this series.
Hanifin + Andersson vs McDavid 5v5
Corsi For: 54.4% (50-42)
Shots: 51.7% (31-29)
HDCF: 51.9% (14 -13)
xGF: 48.9% (2.95 - 3.09)
GF: 0.00% (0-8)
They had a 0.00 on ice shooting percentage, and .724 on ice save percentage.
Just absolutely terrible luck in their head to head time against McDavid.

Hard to accept when most of the experts and pundits had the Flames in the final four. That was not an unrealistic prediction given the season they had, and many of the statistics that you would have thought very relevant in the playoffs (eg goal differential).

If you had told Habs fans after their loss in the finals last year that they would draft 1st the following season, they would probably have said "not a chance" and yet here we are.
Anything could happen.

Sure - but the last year's Habs were also a mile worse than this year's Flames outside of the playoff run.

Great idea, let's base our whole off season strategy on the theory that "anything could happen".
Using the outlier to predict the future is always a great idea.

I think this all hinges on Gaudreau, and unfortunately I think Gaudreau wants to be closer to home. He probably walks for nothing and the Flames are forced into a massive rebuild, having only a second, fifth, and seventh rounder in the up coming draft. Without Gaudreau it is unlikely that Tkachuk wants to hang around either. Tkachuk will take his qualifier and be an UFA at the end of next season. This is probably the best thing for the Flames as it will force their hand elsewhere and likely in a complete burn down to the foundation. I suspect we see this.
Johnny Gaudreau - walks for greener pastures.
Matt Tkachuk - Makes it known he's only going to accept his qualifying offer, forcing the Flames to trade him. I would send him to New Jersey for their first pick, #2 overall, and see if you could pry out Zacha at the same time. That would be two really solid pieces going forward.
Andrew Mangiapane - Going to be expecting big money. Dangle him and see if anyone is interested. Take what picks you can get and move on.
Ryan Carpenter - Waste of a pick. Don't want or need him.
Calle Jarnkrok - You really have to keep him after the price they paid. Letting him walk for nothing would be a waste of assets.
Tyler Toffoli - Keep, but be prepared to move him if a deal comes along to aid in the rebuild.
Sean Monahan - LTIR next season and then he likely retires after getting his last paycheck. Just a guy that injuries ravaged.
Milan Lucic - Try and convince him to retire. He might just do that if he sees the team lose Gaudreau and they are forced to trade Tkachuk and Mangiapane.
Oliver Kylington - Re-sign him and hope he turns into a star. He showed flashes, give him more rope after this year's experience.
Jusso Valimaki - Trade him for anything you can get. Ruined asset.
Erik Gudranson - See if you can sign him to a friendly deal. Need the toughness.
Nikita Zadorov - I like Big Z, but he has to come at the right price. I think he's going to go someplace for more money than Calgary can pay.
Connor Mackie - Bring him up. Play him.
Micheal Stone - Probably gets signed again. The Flames like him.
Matthew Phillips - Multi-generational player. Sign him to an 8 year $120M contract. Immediately retire his jersey and rename the Saddledome after him. He's obviously the answer to McDavid and Draisaitl. I see 600 goals and 1,300 points, just next year alone.
Next year will be a very hard transition to a big rebuild. They are going to have to hope that the junior scorers they have turning pro can continue their exploits and growth. The biggest question I have is whether Treliving lives to have a hand in the rebuild. I think he pushed in all his chips, and there has to be consequences as a result.

Give a roster spot to Mackie to play mind games with the Oilers by also having a Connor Mac in the lineup, just like how the nWo had a fake Sting.

I believe in the Jays.
|
Treliving has his work cut out for him...
Tinkered around on capfriendly to get a cap compliant team that keeps Johnny, Bread & Chucky... it's possible but involves buying out Monahan, trading Lucic & Dube, letting the bottom pairing walk in free agency (with mostly internal replacements).

Where are greener pastures for Johnny, that is also close to home? He can sign 8 years in Calgary.
NJ & Flyers are a tire fire, does he really want to sign a 7 year deal there? Can Boston make room for him? That would be a big risk on the Bruins part to start dealing players trying to make room for Johnny in HOPES that he signs there.

New Jersey is starting to look very good and in my opinion the only other likely option.

Yep, if he left.
Devils would be my guess as well
NJ had major issues last season with goalies (i.e. lots of injuries, 7 goalies played at least 1 game)

One thing Z has said is that he is looking for term. He's been jumping around from team to team. You might be able to get him at a lower cap hit, if you are willing to go 4 years with him.

I thought Johnny grew up hating the Devils? Might play into it.

There is no chance whatsoever that Monahan spends the entire next season on ltir. And less than no chance he retires after that. He's going to have 2 reasonably good hips coming into camp. I expect a bounce back season.

I've heard from veterans and broadcasters that hip surgery, let alone two means the player is a shadow of themselves the next year and will spent a long time in recovery.

I still have a fantasy of seeing what Oliver Kylington would be like as a forward?

That would be acceptable for me. Especially if he takes his homework to heart and returns improved. It will be interesting to see what the market prices end up being come July
