There was question marks about him because he was coming back from injury and wanted out of St. Louis. High salary was so a factor in Tarasenko not being picked.
He then went on to have a great year setting a career high in points and is doing well in the playoffs. He has raised his value again.

Other than Markstrom, I don’t think I could more disappointed in anyone else other than Tkachuk. He fought it against the heavy Stars lineup and really struggled to keep up against the Oilers. Maybe outside of 2 or 3 games, he was mostly bad and actively hurt his line in the process.
Very disappointing especially given how good he was in the playoffs with the London Knights. I figured there was another gear he could hit, but I‘ve seen enough of him in the NHL playoffs that leads me to believe that the Flames should sell high on him.
I think his physical shortcomings and immaturity will always be a factor when it comes to the playoffs and I wouldn’t want to be the team that has to risk paying him $10M a season to see him try to get over that hill. This team has a lot of holes and his cap space saved would ultimately be better spent elsewhere IMO.

Francis on the Marek show this morning already regurgitating his opinion that these players will be in his words "heading off for greener pastures".

I wonder if Francis has even looked into other team’s financial situations before he spouted off that phrase for the last several months. In order for there to be be ”greener pastures” elsewhere...elsewhere has to actually be greener and I’m not sure he’s done the necessary research as there aren’t that many teams that can afford to blow $10M on a winger.

We don't know the Flames offer and we don't know the other offers out there, signing before you do know would be stupid
|
Why would it be stupid if he wants to stay? The fact is nothing another team offers will beat Calgary's because they can give him an extra year. He isn't going anywhere. Even if he listened to other offers it would be just a move to try and drive the price up here. The last thing I am worried about is Gaudreau leaving.

Johnny took a risk playing out this season without a contract going forward. if it was essentially a "done deal" as you allude to, Johnny would have already signed and taken that risk away. There is no logical reason for him waiting to sign, unless he wanted to use the UFA leverage in getting the most money possible.
He may sign with Calgary, but there is certainly a chance he signs elsewhere. He won't come cheap, if he comes at all.
|
There was every reason to wait. Total points, focus on the season, possible awards, added pressure with free agency approaching to get more money, many reasons. The fact he wants to stay, that he bought a home here last off season, that his wife moved up here and works here now, and the fact that BT had to know letting Gaudreau walk for nothing is his pink slip means the odds of Gaudreau leaving are about 1% at best.i get that some posters on this board want to see him walk because they feed off the boards misery and drama but this one is going to disappoint.

Certainly not shocking his newlywed wife would move up here to live with him. It's been known to happen. Lots of players buy homes, then sell them.
The fact that you acknowledge that he may have waited due to him wanting more money is telling. It indicates that he and Trev were likely quite a bit apart on what the value of his contract would be. That would seem to indicate more than a 1% chance (at best) of leaving.

Probably not, but teams find cap space all the time when it doesn't look like any exists.

It has been reported and seems pretty clear that they shelved the talks after they couldn’t get a deal done prior to the season. I suspect that ramps up very quickly with the season over.
Other teams can tamper but if Johnny waits too long the 8 year option goes away. We will see if he is serious about staying in the coming weeks. I lean toward him re-signing but by no means do I think it is a lock

It doesn't indicate that all. Most players wait until just before FA to re-sign, it's a bargaining play. Stamkos did it, Landeskog did it, it would be dumb to sign any sooner even if you want to stay. I expect Gaudreau will sign in the week before FA, possibly the day before. He will get 8 years and a NMC to control his own future. I know you want it go South and enjoy watching Flames fans world burn but it isn't happening with this. Go enjoy the fact we lost the series to Edmonton, lots of drama and misery in that thread for you.

1% chance of Johnny leaving is the worst take of all the bad takes yet. Wives usually prefer to live with their newlywed husbands. Filthy rich people buy houses in multiple places. He just might end up staying but those two things mean nothing.
I agree Johnny walking should be Treliving's pink slip but he knew that and went all in for these playoffs hoping a deep run could help keep the player and maybe save his job regardless of Johnny.

It's been discussed for years now and we will finally find out the true intentions of Gaudreau. He's said all the right things to date but so did Tavares in NY; " I hope to stay in Long Island". I think it's 50/50 at this point and will not be surprised either way if he stays or goes.

I think he stays, but I agree that those two items don't mean much. Real estate is pretty much an even game. You buy, you sell. And often these players end up selling to players who remain (or incoming ones). Wife staying with him - obviously a nothing. But getting a job, though... if she likes it, that's a factor.

We will never have better players then Edmonton (for now), I think a better strategy is to have 3 lines that can attack effectively, model themselves after Vegas.
I would trade Tkachuk to Ottawa for stutzle + draft picks in a heartbeat.
One way or another I am sure there is a way to get Lucic and Monahan off the books.
Sign Malkin at 4 years 6-7 million, you can bridge deal Stuetzle until Malkin deal expires.
Gaudreau Lindholm Toffoli
Mangiapane Malkin Coleman
Stuetzle Backlund Dube(can he play RW)
Not sure who should be on the fourth line
I know Stuetzle should play centre, propably some line juggling throughout season.
Zadorov should be signed and either Mackey or valimaki should be given full time duties

Does anyone really think a patchwork team like this (where you can bank on Malkin missing 40+ regular season games) has any chance at the Cup?

Not to the level of a 24 year old 100 point player

Why is that a patchwork? It's pretty much swapping Tkachuk for Malkin which would be an upgrade.

It's really not clear that it would be. Malkin will be 36 to start next season, hasn't played anywhere close to a full season for 4 years.
Malkin has been a great player, but I really doubt he's better than Tkachuk next year.

Malkin isn't coming here...if you could trade Tkachuk for a haul and get him though it would be an improvement. One for one would not be.

I was with you until you said Malkin. He'd take a pay cut to stay in Pittsburgh I imagine. If not, its hard to believe he'd be interesting in coming here.
