If the league had today’s preparation, fitness, grooming, systems, etc. 30+ years ago would it change who the stars were? It’s easy to assume that the best players would still have been the best, only better, but would they all have thrived in this hockey factory since they were kids? The level of fitness, dedication, diet, etc. might have been a barrier for some but allowed others to rise to the occasion. There are also changes in drafting philosophies that might have an impact.
It’s unknowable but an interesting thought experiment.
