I was shocked I didn't wake up this morning to Facebook notifications of people chirping like I did Saturday. I was ready to trim my friends list.

One is my cousin's husband who is a Flyers fan and likes to troll fans of other teams. He tried telling me on Saturday that the Flames are chippy and that the officiating was just as bad for the Oilers as they were for the Flames.

The next is an Oilers fan from St. Albert whose son billeted with us for one season when he played here. He likes to get on my case when I make comments on how bad the officiating is but when the Flames beat the Oilers like they did in game 1 he likes to make "Not blaming the ref tonight" jabs. Other than that I have no communication with him.

Then, as I'm walking my dog this morning, I'm wearing my Flames hat, and I came across an Oiler fan who just had to chirp. "Better blown up your team, you have no chance, the Cup is ours for the next few years."

I won't initiate or engage in trash talk with strangers but for some reason I get it from Oiler fans regularly.

Today's word of the day is: Smug.

I can't believe how smug the Oilers and their fans are. They put out three decades of some of the most abject failure you will ever see in pro sports, were gifted four first overall picks, and one of them is the best offensive player since Jagr.

Woodcroft is riding the coattails of an offensive playoff performance that comes around every couple of decades and thinks he is a genius. They're not only not in this series without Connor McDavid, they don't even make it out of round 1 without him. Or make the playoffs. But by all means, pat yourself on the back.

Just smug. So, so smug.

That's what I'm doing. One guy had asked me to help him move at the end of June... he asked me less than a week after I got my truck... I said I would if I'm available. I just became unavailable.

It's crazy how smug everyone is up there. Every single member of the media to the coach. My stupid social media algorithms give me the odd Oilers article and the headlines are just so self congratulatory for a group that hasn't done a damn thing yet.

Oh, don't stop there.

They don't even make the playoffs without him.

The difference between the current situation and continued unmitigated failure of that team similar to that which Buffalo has seen for over a decade was a ping pong ball.

They certainly weren't saving themselves without it.

This just feels like the avs series all over for me. That year was mackinnon's coming out party as a truly elite game changer in the biggest moments. Now it's McDavid turn.

It also reminds of the 1993 series against LA when Vernon couldn’t stop an oversized exercise ball if his life depended on it.

I think Jeff Reese started a game IIRC.

Flames came out in period 1 of Game 1 the same as they did against Dallas. Hitting and thoroughly dictating the play.

Been downhill since. Don’t think the third period last night counts. EDM was in shutdown mode.

This from a Sutter coached team that’s been structured snd hard working all year is really concerning.

How a playoff game against your hated rival can turn out to be one of your worst efforts of the year is surprising.

Well, I'm glad some of you aren't on the coaching staff.

End of game 3:
"Well that's it boys, it's time to close up shop. This is just like the Avalanche series."

Player y: "But coach, most of us weren't here for that. We had nothing to do with that team. You weren't here either."

"It was a good run son, it's time to go home."

Player y: "But coach, there are still games to be played, and they have to win two mo-"

"Go home."

Except to EDM. Sigh.
Those effing Oilers. Only they could be lucky enough to draw two teams missing their top defencemen in the playoffs.

A lot of people once again seemingly happily wanting to be first to be posting the eulogies of the Flames after game 3, just like last series.

Game 4 of course is big but we've got a much more unstable opponent than Dallas this round.

Wasn't Vernon injured that series or they would have won against a Kings team that made the Cup finals. I could be misremembering as I was 6 at the time

I don't remember if he was hurt or not. All I remember was Gretzky, Robitaille, Granato, and Sandstrom scoring at will.

Embarrassing franchise. They should have been torn apart in the media for it.

I feel like the Oilers and the Habs, for whatever reason, are the only two teams that could have gotten away with it.
Yeah, the Oilers have a number of personalities who I simply don't like, such as Nurse, Gulutzan, Smith etc., but Kane is someone who just shouldn't be in the NHL. It's brutal to see so many people cheering on a person like that just because he scores some goals for your favourite hockey team.

I hated when the Flames signed Bertuzzi. Thought it reflected poorly on the whole organization. That pales in comparison to signing Kane.

Who is watching a game with their kids and cheering on a guy with a history like that and feeling good about it?

The media has given him the benefit of the doubt since he came back too.

Not even a hint of shade thrown at a guy who pays off women to get abortions.

You can drop the gambling ####storm and he's done enough that he's simply not a guy worth cheering on, by any measure.

Smug? Smeg. That’s what the Oilers are.
