This. Absolutely this.
He's got career earnings of over $60M. If he wants a Cup and, despite loathing the Leafs one must admit they've got a good team.
Instead of being a Mercenary, he's sticking to his home town that has a good shot and taking a haircut to do it.
I hate to say it because its Gio, but man alive...if another Canadian team wins a Cup and its not Calgary it is going to be INSUFFERABLE.
The Oilers, Canucks and Habs were way, way too close for comfort.

Me thinks you're overthinking it; Giordano has agreed to get another 1.6 million dollars to play hockey, that's it. The NHLPA isn't going to give a crap about a 40 year old player signing so low, it happens.

I'd like the Cup to come back to Canada.
Obviously would prefer it to be Calgary, but enough is enough.
Hockey is Canada's game.

I dont think the PA is going to care really.
And if they're pissy about it? They can get lost.

Great deal for the Leafs. Thought the Flames may have signed him to a similar deal but after he moved to Toronto at the deadline it felt like that is where he would finish his career

Oh sweet summer child.
No. If it isnt Calgary you really dont.
The Cup comes back to Canada all the time because half the players in the League are Canadian.
Look at the overwhelming media coverage we get in Canada. We're drowned in Leafs/Habs/Oilers effluvia.
If any one of those teams won it we would never, ever hear the end of it. It would be awful.

And thats why there's been more Canadians on most, if not every team's roster that has won the Cup, than any other nationality for a long long time.
Canadian cities don't "deserve" it more than others. Certainly not to the level where one starts rooting for natural rivals or teams forced nationally down everyone's throats year round, to achieve that.

Hard to say what he would have fetched on the open market...probably 1 year at 1.5-2.5M in some random city.
It's also possible that he ends up as the #7 or even in the AHL eventually depending on their depth chart (claim me and I retire re: waivers)... maybe even home games/near games only in the A. No escrow down there and he'd stay game ready for a playoff run.
He has played 19-20 mins so far as the #4 guy (and 21:30 in SEA this year), so I doubt he'll fall off that fast, but you never know.

Spezza, Thornton, Simmonds, Bogosian, etc.
Perry has also signed a few times under his market value, probably a few other guys, too.

Really cheap, despite him being on the downside of his career. Realistically he's a 5th d-man on most teams and this is a bargain for that given his experience and capability.
On another note, I wouldn't be surprised if Toronto looks to get a guy like Ryan O'Reilly on his last year in arguably an overpay by giving up Nylander. Nylander's contract is really good and obviously puts up points. Could work for both teams.

Congrats to both sides. Leafs get a great guy at a great price and Gio gets to play in a place he obviously wants to be.

No kidding. The last thing I want is a Canadian team to win it if it isn't the Flames. That would be a nightmare.

Not me. The only Canadian team I wouldn't be pissed off if they won besides the Flames is the Senators.
Winnipeg is almost as bad as Vancouver or Edmonton
I'd rather Toronto, especially since they re-signed Gio
