Could be a Mangiapane comparable

Quite the deal for the 30 year old.

I do agree that it is another Mangiapane comparable, along with Connor Garland at 4.95m. Think we can safely lock up Eat Bread to similar $'s with similar term.

Does Mangiapane's playoff performance hurt his contract negotiations?

Nearly the same as the Coleman contract except Rust was nearly a point per game player and Coleman was a 33 point player.

Well, 31 points in 55 games vs. a guy who's stapled to Crosby.

The Athletic has Rust's expected market rate at $9.3 mill.

I'm not one for longer deals on older players, but it does seem like the Penguins got a great deal here.

Career PPG in the playoffs are about the same as Rust's, and from the eye test Mangiapane has been very good in a small sample size.

I think a few posters have mentioned you might be an Oiler fan in , with these type of posts I'm starting to believe them.

Pays to play on Crosby’s wing. Decent deal for the Pens though for someone who has produced.

His playoff performance hasn't been bad IMO. He has been pretty involved.

I think the trickiest part is that there is no denying that he was on quite the heater at the beginning of the season. It makes his future production difficult to predict. If I had to bet, I would think he is more of a 25 goal scorer in the future than a 35 goal scorer. If the AAV for a long term deal is around $5 million, then I don't think it would be a bad signing. If he holds out for more, I would be apprehensive about signing him for the long term.

Yeah, I'm an Oiler fan. Been playing the long con of being on this site since its inception so I can own some of you dweebs over a hockey series 30 years in the future. Commitment is everything! That comment is more proof that the Calgary fan base is no different from the Edmonton fan base and just as stupid in many regards. "Don't be critical of our team, only be critical of others, and if you are critical you're nothing but a fan of another team in sheep's clothing!" So HFOil.

I would argue the playoff eye test hasn't been very good for Mangiapane. Outside of one game against Dallas he's been pretty invisible. He scored 35 goals during the regular season and was considered to be that secondary scoring threat we would so badly need to win in the post season, but his finishing has dried up (50% reduction in shooting efficacy and production). There were talks of him being a $6M player, but I would say his playoff performance to date is likely to cut into that. Rust is a good comparable, but I would think Mangiapane's current playoff performance could/should see a contract less than that. There is of course more games to be played, but if he wants something north of what Rust is getting, he needs to start filling the net.

I think that line of Mangiapane Backlund and Coleman has been a great line for the Flames and I’m excited what they could look like next year. He was on a heater this year to start but he also had a revolving door of line mates all year. He’s the kind of battler that does do well in playoff hockey. Just wish he’d stop with the after the whistle stuff.

The Athletic is insane if they thought anyone would pay that.
