I think the main issue with downtown vibrancy is not mandating street facing retail on the towers.

Did Mr. Mikes not survive? That was just opened wasn’t it?

Is Blowers & Grafton known for anything? That’s kind of close to me, so would be nice to have another good restaurant around here.

It’s a mediocre Halifax inspired pub. So overpriced fish and chips and donairs. Not terrible but probably not much different from Scotsman’s across the parking lot. It’s not bad but I wouldn’t call it a good restaurant.

I’m not sure how street facing retail would make me want to stay downtown longer than I need to.

I’ve never had anything bad at blowers, pizza is pretty good, pepperoni is tasty. Scotsman’s sucks.

Because it creates people on streets which drives vibrancy. Restaurants and shopping create a destination which in turn draws more people in.

It's a chicken/egg thing. People draw businesses--> businesses draw people-->more business-->more people.

Our downtown is probably unsalvageable from a vibrancy standpoint for a long time to come, but we can at least stop digging the hole of bad design any deeper than we already have.

If the approved design for the new arena is any indication, there's still plenty of bad urban design coming Calgary's way. There's only so much that city administration can do to improve placemaking in Calgary if developers don't want to cooperate and things like budgets keep getting cut.

"Creekside Blowers" sounds like a 2nd degree Felony.

Or at least a misdemeanor.

In the nostalgia, things people miss thread there was a lot of talk about the Palliser Tower complex and how it used to be a huge passenger rail station with shops and retail and the movie theatre where the Empire Strikes Back premiered in Calgary, etc.

I worked there for years and it was a desolate ghost town brutalist place in recent times.

Lately, the Palliser One tower was recladded and it has been announced a lot of it is being converted to residential. I also just saw this article about taking over a lot of the empty record room space and turning it into an urban farm. That's pretty cool.

Interesting that that Best Buy closed, it's such a busy area. I think H Mart will do great. It's far enough from T&T in Harvest Hills and a lot of Asian population in that area.

I'm not sure since the Loblaws in Sage Hill is being converted to a T&T right now so there will be 2 Asian groceries fairly close.

Church's chicken is finally coming back to Calgary. Not sure when it will be open though.

At Sage hill. Have been going to their Edmonton locations when I have been up. Still the best fried chicken I think!

Oh yeah, like most big American hyped franchises going to Canada, just give it some time. Not worth the hassle that first few weeks.

I'm at Earl of Sandwich now. No one here. Talked to the owner said Google messed them up. Their first day was last Wednesday but Google said they were closed Monday Tuesday but they have been opened everyday
