[LOL] Coyotes release their STH seating chart for their 5000 person arena

I see what they are doing. People were worried that playing in the smaller place could hurt league revenue and ultimately the cap. This would be the case if a team like Toronto was going to a 5000 seat place for a few years. But with Arizona, if you only get 5000 people, this plan won't hurt revenue. But they are taking it one step further. If this place sold out, 5000 seats at an average of around $200? Their revenue would more than double what it is now. Right around the same as the Lightning.

If it works the way they're hoping, they sell out season tickets due to low supply and higher demand being in Tempe and then start building a season ticket waiting list which they can arm themselves with for when they do eventually move. Hold some tickets each night and allow those on the waiting list to access first, etc. Similar to Calgary's model in the early 80s.

One thing that's working against them, though, is how bad the team is and likely will be for the next few years.

I'm just worried about the camera angle when the Flames play there on TV. Some of those hometown hockey games in small town rinks were nauseating to watch on TV.

The allure for snowbirds to drop $400USD to attend a run of the mill game against a random team is probably next to non-existent once you get past the initial honeymoon phase or seeing their hometown Canadian team roll through. I'd find it pretty shocking if there were anything close to even half of the 5000 capacity in local fans prepared to regularly toss out than kind of dough for that product either.

It's not like any decent FA players are going to be lining up to play in that side show of a situation suddenly either. A couple of seasons is likley more along the lines of continually bad save for 2-3 years where they were half decent....and then really, really bad again.

“In-ice advertising will be a revenue source for Arizona State, and the Coyotes aren’t allowed to modify the look of the ice surface – including the Arizona State logo at center ice — on broadcasts to protect ASU’s permanent advertisers in the building.”

Another thing working against them is Arizona is a terrible hockey market and no one cares about the NHL or the Coyotes there.

I can only imagine how this feels for the "legends" and players who spent a majority of thier career there building the Coyotes brand. Players like Doan, Roenick, Keith Tkachuk, Hanzel, etc.

I wonder if the league will step in after 1 year and say this isn't acceptable and makes us look bush league. The NHL may think they can hide the team away from any TV coverage since the Coyotes suck and won't get national games anyways but its still embarrassing.

In the NBA when Hurricane Katrina damaged the arena in New Orleans - they played a couple of years in Oklahoma City in a real arena instead of playing in a shoebox. Worked out for the NBA as they found a new market that could support a team as well.

I will say, having seen a few Harvard games this year in a comparable arena, that it's a great experience as a fan. You feel like you're right inside the game. If I can make a Flames game down there next year I'll do it.

Either way, this debacle is embarrassing and it's happening on Bettman's watch. The NHL plays in big rinks. The KHL plays in tiny barns like this.

The entire Athletic article was a nothing burger full of misrepresentations and is being taken as gospel.. again.

In 5 years, the Coyotes will be playing in a new Arena in Tempe and the Athletic will not exist.

Ok, but the ASU logo takes up the entire center circle. If it can't be altered, then the problem remains.

What are the Coyotes going to do - put a logo off to one side? Behind the nets?

Guess its splitting hairs - do any NHL teams have another teams logo on their ice? Even if there is a Coyotes logo present as well - still bad.

(Also the Athletic got bought by the NY Times for $550 million so suspect the founders are doing ok)
