He's 5 and this is really the first year he's understanding and getting into following a sports team as opposed to watching the puck or ball on the screen. His team is the Calgary Flames. He doesn't understand the difference between leagues, the other day he came home saying that a classmate told him the Eagles are the best team, and he was saying no the Flames. For the record the Eagles are the local QMJHL team.

I recently found my 2004 Playoff CD, so we were listening to it in the car. The first track is the Chris Cuthbert Gelinas OT goal against Vancouver. So I was explaining to him how it was my favourite sports moment ever. Then why it was.

I also talked to him about how the playoffs work (Four Rounds, like Four Levels in a video game). Then that the Flames lost in the final level. He kept going on about how the Flames just kept getting better, and now are the best team in all the land.

I tried to prepare him for a Game 7 loss, because... well...

He just kept correcting me that the Flames were the best team in all the land.

Period.

It dawned on me that this kid has no idea what sports heartbreak is, or that it even exists. It's unfathomable.

Yesterday, due to sheer laziness I wore one of my Flames ball caps all day rather than comb my hair (yay weekends).

When the little guy was putting his pjs on, he took the hat off my head and wore it on his own head. Refused to take it off. Fell asleep with it on.

Spoiler!

After putting him to bed I went to grab a beer to watch the Pens/Rangers game before our own Game 7.

Went to the cupboard and reached for a glass.

Generally I use a shaker style pint glass. A stylized version of this one:

Spoiler!

But the Flames each game this series I used that one. Game 6 I made sure to use my Willi Becher glass (also from the Breton Brewing Company) as the Flames won each game I use that. However, that didn't work Friday night.

So I debated which to use, and opted for a hand made ceramic mug that the Breton Brewing Company gave to its Mug Club members this year. I'm not usually a fan of it, but figured "if this is the last game, what the hell".

Watched the Pens/Rangers until start time. Watched the first, then popped a melatonin and went to bed.

Alas, the 11pm start times, with a young child, and work doesn't allow for me to stay up late anymore.

At about 12:30 went to the bathroom, crawled back in bed and as I reached for my phone my wife says "did you check the score?" I replied "about to now." She said "it's tied 2-2". I thought great. To my shock, was out cold again.

Not sure when I woke up again, again to the bathroom (beer and Gatorade before bed isn't a great combination) when I got back my wife asked the same thing. Then informed me that the Flames won 3-2. I checked my phone to confirm.

Woke up extra early to put the highlights on to watch with my son.

When he saw the Red Lot erupt he jumped up and waved his hands in the air.

If we make the finals, and if I convince my wife to let me use points to go, and ifwe have enough points to go, and ifI get the time off work, and if relatives are in town, and if we can stay with them, and if... and if... and if... I think I'd be happy with the Red Lot even if we don't get tickets.

Man I still can't believe that OT winner went in, I can't believe Gaudreau shot it from that angle, I can't believe Ottinger was beat on a clean shot, I just can't believe after the series they had that they were able to pull it out.

Flames were the better team, but a hot goalie can take you to the finals and even win it.

I stopped and started this post a few times. So hopefully it's coherent.

TL;DR can't wait for the ATL
That's awesome, keep the Flames alive in Cape Breton man.

Side note
Spoiler!

That beer is awesome, had quite a few pints of their red coat ale last summer, they even sell it in the 16th century pub at Fort Louisbourg.

Still in shock. What a night! Dream come true.

Would still love to see video of Lewis and Tyler meeting Markstrom for hugs at centre ice.

And no video of Tre and Connie?

I found that odd too, I never seen 1 clip of Tre and Connie all series.

The Stars were 5th overall in the conference for the second half of the season. The position both teams finished was skewed by the first half of the season, but if you want to know which was the better team on day one of the playoffs, it was Dallas. Granted, we aren't talking about huge differences in points for the second half, it was pretty tight, but the label of "wild card team" unfairly makes it sound like Dallas was barely a playoff team while L.A. better. I would say that they were probably more or less equal caliber until you factor in that Oettinger put in the best playoff series goaltending performance in a generation.

The other factor was experience - LA had something like 9 guys making their first playoff appearance, while Dallas is a veteran club that had played in 6 series in the prior 3 years, including a cup final.

I think experience is HUGE in the playoffs. And in that regard, there was no comparison between the two teams.

Plus, Oettinger, of course.

Two days later and I still can't believe the Flames overcame all those obstacles to win a playoff round in such dramatic fashion. I can really see this catapulting them into a long run now.

I hated Zadarov when the Flames played Colorado. Dude was crushing everyone and the Flames were legit scared of him.

I think he got injured the season afterwards and lost a step from it.

"The start of that movie was so anticlimactic"! "The middle of the book was too anticlimactic for my tastes." When have you ever heard anything like that?

An anticlimactic ending would be an own-goal or a Mike Smith brain fart…..something that is completely out of character with the rest of the game. A great shot into the smallest opening on the worst angle after a dangerous first shot is completely in keeping with the game. It took a perfect shot to win it. Scored by the best player who had been robbed several times already. There is no anti- there. None.

I can't see how the Flames can fit him under the cap next year. I like big Z but he is overpayed.

I'm ok with getting rid of Hanifin since he still has great trade value.

Regular season means nothing. We need these big dmen for the playoffs.

Yeah I'd love to keep the Zad dog but with all the new contracts upcoming I think this is his last ride with us.

In no universe should the Flames keep Zadorov over Noah Hanifin.

This probably isn't the time to talk about it, but with the Flames upcoming cap crunch if they are somehow able to get Gaudreau/Tkachuk/Mangiapane/Kylington all re-signed, there is a very real chance that they will lose Zadarov/Gudbranson/Ritchie/Lewis and maybe even Lucic (retire/cap dump/buy out).

While it'll be amazing to keep all those high end skill players, losing that much toughness in one off season will be devastating.

I don't envy Treliving one bit this off season.

I don't think we have a Dman equivalent to Pelletier ready to take the next step let alone top pairing duties with Ras.

I don't know. Hanifin just reminds me of Bouwmeester but with the bad luck of Brodie where his major mistakes end up in our net.

Besides the playoffs is where it is at. Who cares if you have 55points in the regular season when you are mediocre in the post season.

Well we NEVER want to go back to being the 98LB weakling of the NHL. We've seen how that played out before for the past decade.
