I think the City has this exactly wrong.

It should be like Survivor whereby the lowest ranked bird in each round of voting is exterminated from the city proper.

If you have access to your flue in the basement tap on it with something metal and strong enough to make a decent sound resonate up the pipe and he’ll take off. (Don’t hit it too hard and damage the flue).

That is only temporary though and then timun would have to get up early when the flickers are hammering on his flue...interrupting his sleep.

They won't be drumming and hammering much longer. The males do that at this time of year trying to attract a mate. Once mating season is over, they usually quit.

Yesterday I had an adventure with a very polite Northern Flicker. It came down the fireplace chimney pipe and couldn't get back up. It tapped on the flue and every so often called out (for help, I presume). I opened the ash cleanout hatch into the garage, cardboarded the fireplace opening, and pulled open the flue damper. Then left it alone for a while. Shortly after, I heard some tapping and the fellow made it into the garage and was tapping gently on the window. I opened the garage door and out he went. Thank goodness it worked as chasing a panicked Northern Flicker through the house would have been insane. Now I find myself a shameless Northern Flicker promoter.

Some tapping on the chimney pipe can't possible be worse than the cacophony of a flock of young, stupid magpies clustered on a rooftop or nearby tree at 6am.

The Loggerhead Shrike is bad ass:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loggerhead_shrike

Quote:
Due to the shrike's small size in proportion to the size of its prey, it must rely on specialized adaptations to facilitate its hunting. The powerful, hooked beak of the loggerhead shrike allows it to sever the neck of a small vertebrate. Larger prey are subjected to impaling, in which they are pushed down into a sharp projection, such as a thorn or barbed wire. The bird can then tear off flesh by using the projection as an anchor. The shrike may also use the thorn to fasten and store its food to return to at a later time.

No love for the Brown Headed Cow Bird? I mean, if the magpie is an SOB, the cow bird is god damn SOB.

I am beginning to get the feeling that birds in general are jerks.

I voted magpie. Had to. They're jerks but they're badass, and any time we can steal something from Edmonton I'm all for it.

They're gonna be a lot of disappointed people in here when the magpie wins haha, just feels inevitable that it will.

That, and a couple of Canada geese have taken over the rooftop of the apartment building across the street from my balcony. The other day I shockingly watched a magpie harass it, it had the goose walking around in circles trying to avoid it. The enemy of my enemy is my friend..

Magpies have set up a nest in a pine tree in our backyard and they seem to be deterring other birds from using our bird houses.

Also looks like a lot of blue jays around now. Saw a few along some green space.
