The biggest change is Smith is regressing back towards his typical standard SV% of .915. He always goes on hot streaks and he had a significant heater in April. He's been inconsistent in this series and is starting to regress back to his mean. In my opinion, Edmonton needs elite level goaltending because their 5 on 5 play is too weak.
Last night (game 5) was SV% of .884 was not good enough. Game 1 (L) was .886. Game 2 (W) was 1.000. Game 3 (W) was .957. Game 4 (L) was .933. His SV% this year was .915 but I think he needs to be at least .930 or better for Edmonton to win the next two in a row.

was a reasonably typical Smith game last night- the Oilers were leaking high danger chances against and he made some strong saves, but then let in two , maybe 3? stinkers too. he's facing a lot of shots though, so this is going to happen

That's Nazim Kadri levels of playoff stupidity. 9.25m per year for the next 8 with full NMC for the first 5 years and M-NTC/NMC (10 team trade) for the final 3.

"We outscored them by a wide margin! It should be based on total goals, because we were obviously the better team!"
Book it.

Flames outscored the Sharks by 9 in 1995 and lost the series- not sure what the record is, but that was horrible
seem to recall Flames were the first team (or have I made this up) to outscore their opponent and lose the final (2004)
so yes please, bring this on

Quick has a .887
Smith has a .930
for the series
Oilers are getting worked out there...they are getting the goaltending and still losing so if Smith is falling off we are about to see a blowout

I agree. I'm not suggesting that Quick has been better than Smith or outdueling Smith. I am also not suggesting that Smith has been bad objectively this series.
I just think that in my opinion, because Edmonton has been poor defensively and gives up a lot 5 on 5, they need him to perform at least .930 to win. He really can't let in more than 2 or 3 a game. Smith's heater in April seems to be slowing down and he's turning back into his regular self. If he dips below .930 and LA continues to carry the play, then the Oilers have to try to outscore their problems - which is tough when you don't have the puck very much.
Could totally change but that's what I'm seeing.

If you said, before the series started, that Smith's save percentage would be more than 40 points higher than Quick's, then the only sane prediction would have been Oilers in 4 or 5 games.
The fact that that is the case, and yet they are LOSING the series, is truly astounding.
One big game from Quick, or #### game from Smith, and the Oilers are golfing.

LAs offense is anemic, that's also bloating Smith's numbers. They get a ton of shots on net but mostly they're not that dangerous. But even the dangerous ones they convert at a modest rate.

I recall a 13-3 game or something to that effect v San Jose. Not unlike games 2 and 3 in the LA/EDM series. Ya gotta be consistently good, not just from time to time.

Why would Nurse do that, in that situation of the game, it didn't require it and Smith was handling the puck just fine without it and he was in no way coming close to Smith before the whistle. I'll tell you what it is, it's a weak man getting the upper hand on a player that he feels got the better of him in a different situation early. He needed the leverage of the headbutt to get the upper hand and that's why this headbutt will lead to a suspension and not a fine - it was blatantly trying to injury a player for no hockey reason what so ever.

This. People talk like he's a sieve and he does have games like that. But more often than not he makes a lot of good saves because he's big and fairly agile (and he needs to be because his positioning is bad). But he will let in stinky soul crushing goals at the worst times.
