I sat on a Nose Hill Park community advisors group in the late 1990s, and we felt that grass fires in the park are a bit of a concern because there's so much dead growth on the hill. This dead growth used to get taken care of naturally, but since there are no more prairie fires to clear it out, it just builds up now. We reommended to the City that they should get the fire department out and do so controlled burns to lessen the risk of an out of control blaze threatening homes around the park. We were told that they wouldn't or couldn't do any control burns due to liability and insurance issues. It would seem to me that the park is a bit of a powder keg waiting to go off and that not doing contolled burns to mitigate the risk is also a liability. If I had a house that bordered on the park, I'd be talking to my alderman.
I was on the phone with my mother around 12:00 AM my time... so 10 PM in Calgary... and she was more concerned about how big the fire was than talking to me... though we do live at a pretty safe distance.
