Not really, but it is a way of the league to have a record of bad behaviour (like a letter on file in any other job), so when the record is getting long, they can punish appropriately (while leaving the union little too no grounds for appeal).
If the suspension was automatic (in general, not saying he shouldn't have been given the suspension), the union would appeal them all, with a rap sheet, the appeal holds little weight.

Sorry, I agree. I should have put quotes around make-up. There defintely should have been one for Tanev.

Repeat offender in the same playoff series in back-to-back games should be an automatic suspension. The league is letting Benn act with impunity. If he injures someone, who ever is in charge of discipline should be held accountable.

Well they have a record showing his repeat status now (and very recent), so you have to think they should have him on a short leash now, no?
He probably should have had a suspension by now, from at least one of his transgressions...but the league has always treated it's "stars" differently, and like it or not, Benn is a "star" that they want in the games...
If he commits another foul warranting supplemental discipline, there would have to be a suspension, right???? Hopefully the threat of that alone will neuter him further (Lucic already started the job!!!).
It's akin to a soccer player being on multiple yellow cards, getting another forces them to miss the next game.

Seriously, Benn fined twice in the same series, plus getting away with the same against Tanev and trying to poke Mangiapane's eyes. Why isn't he suspended for at least a game?
The two fines are complete joke considering there have been at least 4 incidents involving him.

Benn looks so dumb with that facial hair. Hopefully Lucic uses it as a target next game.

I think it's funny how when Tkachuk takes an extra swipe at the goalie's pads just before the ref blows the whistle or pokes a player from the bench so lightly that the player didn't even know it happened, it causes such a hoopla among the media. They all start thinking of the children and how horrible it is. Then someone like Benn pulls stuff like this constantly, and it gets brushed aside quickly.

Not as blatant as the one on Tanev. Both could have easily resulted in injury. Benn is trying to be relevant.

I didn't realize Benn was such a nasty dirty player. That poking Mangiapane in the face is just so dangerous and so intentional that it deserves a suspension and not a fine, if that's the "maximum" the NHL can do, then there is something wrong. What would have happened if he poked him in the eye and caused a real serious injury, maybe even career ending - it's such a delicate area to be jabbing your stick there on a defenseless player. This, imo, is worse than a dirty hit because a player was trying to live on the edge of the rules and got a little high or off the mark, that at least would have been in the heat of play, this was during a stoppage with the intent to aggravate or injury a defenseless player pinned down by the play.
It takes a really BIG man to hit a player in the face with your stick when he's pinned down - and if the NHL won't suspend him, then this is why players and teammates feel the need to take matters into their own hands - you would think the NHL would learn this lesson, but once a game is out of hand, I expect Lucic to blast him.

Will it take a player being taken off in a stretcher to get this guy suspended? This isn't agitator stuff, it's plain dirty and dangerous.

I've been trying to be a Stars fan since moving 8 years ago and Ken Holland making me hate my lifelong team, but man does Benn make it so hard to root for this team. I got downvoted on reddit for calling Benn out as the d-bag he is. The only bright side is he is I don't see him having too many years left. The new core of Dallas is much more exciting, and the sooner they can move on from Benn, Seguin, and Radulov, the better.

Huh I would have thought back to back fines would result in a more severe punishment than just the fines.
I guess the fact the Flames players didn't get injured reduces the punishment? They do work as historical evidence for repeat offenders, but now thats 2 pretty dirty plays that wont at all impact the Stars in any negative way.
Just seems off to me.

Back to the Mangiapane incident, why did Benn get the fine for high-sticking and not spearing? Does spearing carry a higher punishment that the NHL didn't want to dole out?

I think that's exactly it.
If they call it a spear it has to come with a suspension.
Cowards.

That is the lowest to the ground high stick I have seen. Cowards is right, do your damn job NHL. This league is such a joke way too often.

Two incidents that result in league mandated fines in a single series should have you out of the next game, sort of like accumulated yellow cards in soccer.

NBA has something this with flagrant/technical fouls, too. IIRC 4 of them=1 game suspension

Especially given the missed slewfoot on Tanev too.
