Game 4 was a critical game in 2020. Flames were a minute away from going up 3-1 but Pavelski scored with the net empty and the Stars needed up taking that game and the next 2 which was a springboard to their finals run. Last night the Stars got a performance from their goalie that would have allowed them to steal the game if they were not up against an elite goalie on our side.
The Flames were not going to be denied last night. I really hope that was a similar turning point where the team really feels like they know what they need to do to win this series. I feel like the Dome will be as loud or louder than game 1 and if the Flames can punish the Stars the same way on Wednesday I like our chances of taking 3 straight against them

The Penalty Shot....okay, I dont think I've ever seen a PS in a Playoff game before but...I watched that live and I knew they were going to toss Klingberg.
That was a penalty every day and twice on Sundays...a blind man could have seen it.
I think I even saw the Ref shrug his shoulders before awarding it. Like:
"What do you want me to do? He slashed his hands, on a breakaway, twice."
And the thing is...thats a huge risk. This isnt soccer where a penalty is like 90% a goal, in hockey its pretty 50/50. Oettenger makes that save and momentum swings like a huge pendulum.
I will agree that I loved watching the Stars being penned in their own zone. Klingberg was on the ice for four and a half minutes? That kind of icetime wears on you over a series.
The penalty after that was pure game management.
Obviously I am in a different demographic than you but the first one I saw was in the Flames/Habs series in 1986.
Game 1, Al MacInnis put one in on Patrick Roy. Unfortunately, game 1 is the only game we won in that series.
I know it’s obvious but the 5 on 3 goal to me might be the series changer. Not just that the goal itself was key, but I was concerned about not scoring and the implications for the game and therefore the series.
If Calgary comes up empty with an almost 2 minute 5-on-3, it's a gut punch to the Flames and especially the top line.
Walt's reaction that AC posted tells you how important that goal was:

I think it's more like 30-35% goals. And a PP is about 20%.
So it's a little more of a reward than a penalty is, which IMO, makes perfect sense. Tripping or hooking a guy that has a clear breakaway should have more repercussions than a casual trip in the neutral zone, or accidentally shooting the puck over the glass.
Also, they are exciting. And, IIRC, the objective here is entertainment.
Exactly, Mangiapane barely touched Robertson and he fell down only because his legs were rubber after a 4 minute shift.
Don’t know if I have ever watched a series that was as “game managed” by the officiating as this one. It’s not rocket science to figure out why there has been very little momentum in this series… the refs have been making it that way.
I know that refs often look to make “even-up” calls in most games but this series has them in spades and in order. The number of penalties is virtually even and, if you look at the scoresheet, it is almost always back and forth with the powerplays. Once the flames get one, it’s Dallas’s turn, etc. Also explains why there are so many 4-on-4s… the refs are doing everything they can to keep it a close, perfectly even score.
The better way to keep it even/fair is to not call so much. That way the teams can build momentum. That doesn’t mean let either team get away with murder out there… just call it evenly but not so tightly. There have been sooo many ticky -tack penalties in this series it’s ridiculous - on both sides. That penalty on mangiapane was brutal… but the refs seemed to feel momentum building for a team and they needed to find something to stop it.

When did the Lucic/Benn confrontation happen? I must have missed it, but I want to go back and see it.
Benn still scares me because the guy is a snake.
opening faceoff, which you know Lucic was taking because he's a left handed shot, and he and Lewis often switch off like this ( ...in the offensive zone...)

I must admit I was pretty anxious at the time- Johnny had a good game, but he hasn't exactly had the touch lately.Penalty shot may have the higher odds, but a save there and the momentum totally switches, powerplay at least gives you control for 2 minutes (or less) in a late close game. boy was I glad to be wrong that PS was the preferred option

That was awesome. I got a kick out of how Sutter addressed it
The glorious part of Lucic sending the message to Benn at the beginning of the game is that there is no one on the Stars that can respond so Benn basically just has to watch himself for the rest of the game (series?) - so unlike Flames' teams of the recent past. And then on the same shift, Lucic almost scores.
Is it still a thing that the visiting team has to provide their starting line first so that the home team can adjust accordingly? If so, check and mate Rick Bowness.
It's over for the Stars. For them to win the series they would have had to beat us in 5 games max.
We are just going to pound them into submission for the rest of the series!
and they have no one to blame but themselves. Lowest scoring team in the league, terrible offensively, and yet they are trying to make perfect passes on their PP. LOL they are not talented enough. Cost them the series. They don't have no Modano, Hull or Zubov on this team.

Yeah, it's always such a letdown when a PS misses and it's just back to 5 on 5. Sometimes I think there should be at least a minute of powerplay after a missed PS.
