Depends on what vehicle. If it's a van or anything in high demand, there's barely any room to negotiate because someone else might run through the door at any moment willing to pay full price. But if you notice a used car that's been around for a while that isn't moving, it doesn't hurt to ask to negotiate. The harder part is not to commit and to continue looking if they say no.
However, some small town dealerships do some interesting financing ploy that might help you get something of a few hundred bucks if the financing guy is savvy enough..
For instance, my buddy got 3M for free (more like $120 bucks) by splitting the financing commission with the guy. They basically picked up $900 in commissions for the amount that was financed and gave my buddy the 3M "for free" my buddy just had to agree to maintain 3 auto payments worth of financing with the bank for like 30 days or something like that and immediately pay the amount in excess of the 3 payments as soon as the loan was opened. I think it was like $120 of interest for something the dealership would normally charge around $800-1K. However, we believe the dealership did that deal because as long as they get the $900, cost of the 3M (and we think they probably had excess taking up space they wanted to get rid of) plus labour would be less than the $900 or whatever they received.
If not Calgary, definitely look into the small surrounding towns in Airdrie, Okotoks, Strathmore etc. to see if they're more willing to do a deal.
