And they don’t want to be showing games on ESPNU. Also an option tbs and tnt don’t have.

Oh, I agree with you. It doesn't really work that way anymore.
But we are talking about advertisers who still think it pays to buy commercial time on broadcast and cable TV. If your customers don't know what century they're living in, you'd best go along with them and take their money.

SN would rather have the Canadian team on the channel you have to pay for than the free one if possible

We'll have a good A/B test in this series since the Dallas home games at 730 (930 EST) while the Calgary games start at 8 (10 EST)

The ease in which I use DAZN, and the absolute insanity of NHL options, tells me that SNET and the NHL have zero interest in spending any money on improving their online products.
I’m absolutely ecstatic to send DAZN my money. They have even added commercials now and I’m okay if it keeps things going. I wish DAZN would get NHL rights!

That has happened in the past, but, not for this round due to many complaints about this.

If Pens and Rangers go to overtime tonight to watch the Flames, it will be only available on a paid channel, or at least outside the Calgary area because we aren't the Leafs or Canadiens.

It already happened. Flames were only on SN W for game 1. A pay channel.

That is correct. I meant that the schedule for this round of the playoffs had all three canadian teams on a free channel (CBC). When overtime happens in the first game, the pay channel becomes necessary.

The main complaint from viewers has been that the four regional Sportsnet channels should show the second game from the beginning while the CBC channel continues with the first game until it is over. It is a very poor decision by Sportsnet to limit the Flames game to one channel while the Penguins-Rangers game is on the CBC and three regional channels. The complaints are continuing.

Don’t know if it’s just me watching in boring old HD, but is there something going on with the camera? When it pans it looks awful. I don’t remember this before.

American broadcasts that do a little PIP box of the goalie skating off for an empty-net are a little silly (though I get why they do it), but cutting the entire shot to the goalie skating off is just bad. I know it isn't really a new thing, but it's felt particularly jarring in these playoff games...

Fun fact: Back in the 1970s, David H. Ahl compiled a book with source code for dozens of primitive computer games in BASIC. In 2010, an updated edition of the same book was published – and Ahl wrote a preface mentioning that some of the AI algorithms from those 1970s games were still being used in modern video games, including EA Sports games.
If you've ever wondered why the AI is so crappy in EA games, now you know. The AI that automates your PVR is pretty much exactly the same level of crap.
|
Thanks for sharing that. It got me curious and I found the forward to the 2010 edition. This is probably the part that you're thinking of

Combat, game #28 in this book, carries this strategy one step further. In it, you must allocate your 72,000 troops to the three services: Army, Navy, and Air Force. You then decide which service attacks first and with how many troops—not much different from the logic used in scores of modern games of warfare. Except for the fact that the logic in Combat is contained in about 100 lines of easily deciphered code, it is fundamentally the same logic used in a game like Gears of War.
|
Looking at the source code for that game, I can confidently say that it shares no algorithms with Gears of War. The only thing it shares is the general problem of troop distribution.
That being said, it is true that algorithms from the 70s and earlier are used all the time in modern games. A* Search was originally publish in 1968 and is used in many modern games. It's the default pathfinding algorithm used by Unreal Engine. Does that make it bad? No, it's just that we haven't found a general purpose algorithm yet that does a better job. Sure we've got better algorithms for certain problems, like JPS+ being much faster for uniform static cost grids, or Bidirectional Search for certain problem spaces.
Now I know next to nothing about PVRs, but I'm pretty confident that there's no AI being used to determine what channel to record, and if there is it has no resemblance to the AI used in games. There's plenty of other reasons for them to suck, and the likely candidate is something boring like the guy programming it doesn't watch sports, so doesn't know how convoluted the blackouts get.

Never forget misunderstood requirements especially when the costs increase.
Change requests cost money. And never forget that it will get fixed “next time” and then either the team or the priorities change.
