That's pretty much what retooling is and is what they will probably do. They might not target Gaudreau, but given the season they had, some players will be moved out and new players brought in through trade and free agency.
It's rare that a player like Gaudreau becomes available through free agency and teams will sort out cap issues to add him.
This isn't meant to be a doom and gloom post. I think there is a good chance he re-signs with the Flames. Just hypothetically speaking, if he does become a free agent, he will have a lot of suitors including teams that will need to figure out cap logistics after the fact.

I don't recall there being a vote making you the spokesperson.
Regular season does matter - a great deal - because revenues are largely driven by STHs, something I strongly suspect you are not.

I think Sutter would, for the most part, agree with Bo Levi's statement.

Those are the 2nd and 3rd best point totals in this franchises history, and some of you want to get rid of the GM that built those teams?
Sounds like a pretty dumb idea to me, but whatever floats your boat.

If they don’t win at least this series, that don’t matter . And it’s not like they are losing to a contender. They lost to arguably the worst team that made the playoffs.
They are still known as a team that can’t win when it matters

And how many of those STHs do you think are going to walk away when the Flames choke away another first round playoff series? Regular season only matters as far as making the playoffs, once that's accomplished total points mean nothing

Giroux has 75 points in 88 playoff games and a visit to the Stanley Cup finals. I'd take that "disappearing act" all day over what the Flames' core players have done in their careers so far.

Sutter cares about making the playoffs, without Johnny and Chucky we're in the draft lottery.

Maybe being in the draft lottery for once is what this team needs.

Thats what the Flames thought when they fired Dave King who made the playoffs every year.... how did that work out for us?

Getting to the playoffs is necessary but insufficient.

That proven winner stuff doesn’t matter nearly as much as fans want to believe. With the parity in the NHL today, in any six year period very few teams are going to stick in the top five or bottom five - most teams will be bouncing up and down in the middle 20 of the standings (just look at the Flames’ fortunes over the last six seasons). So competitively theres not much to choose between teams. Geography, taxes, travel days, family all matter more.

I don't think POs will deter any team from going after either guy. At best it might make a million dollar difference in the offers.

For sure that's the 1st step, however Sutter is aware results within the playoffs are really the only thing that matters.

You make this post like you are actually an agent, player, or executive but you are just a fan. Telling other fans their opinion is not accurate but yours is doesn’t move the needle for me at all.
Players all have different motivations to play where they do. I think players choose teams they think will have success sooner than later as well as their fit on the team.
I think winning is on par with the other things you have mentioned. I am sure players look at who they would be playing with and the trajectory of the team when making that decision.
Johnny will be a top 1-3 for paid player on any team he signs with and will be expected to be a top player on whatever team he chooses.
If what you said is true the Devils make the most sense since they have the space to offer him money and have some of the best travel in the league.
I think money, role, and chance of winning are just as important or more important than travel, taxes, and geography.

Part of an underdog team that made the Stanley Cup finals. Point per game player the next season, then one of the most impressive series by a player in recent years against a hated divisional rival.
2012 was the year that the the Penguins were doing fine without the injured Crosby lead by an impressive Hart/Lindsay winning Malkin. Then they got Crosby back in March and they went on a surge to almost win the President Trophy with Crosby putting up 25 points in 14 games. Malkin also had 25 points, Dupius had 17, Neal 16 (in 12), Kunitz 15, Staal 12, Letang had 11 in 11, and even Cooke had 7 goals, 11 points in the 14 games leading up to the playoffs. The team was on fire and the easy Stanley Cup favourites.
Then they ran into Giroux who single handedly decided that the Penguins wouldn't be winning the cup that year. With 14 points in 6 games, Giroux built enough good will that he could have literally laid down and slept on the ice for the remaining playoff games he played as a Flyer and they would still love him.

My comment was based on interviews I’ve read with agents and other insiders over the years. Over the span of a contract longer than a couple years, 20+ of the teams in the NHL are regarded as effectively in the the same competitive band. It’s only the handful of teams at the extremes where it comes into play.
