I’ll never understand why there’s so much criticism with Gaudreau’s button hook. Like, what’s the alternative? Try to take it hard to the net and get crushed into the boards or sandwiched into the net and goalie? To me, the button hook is a great tool to use if you don’t have the angle to cut past the defender as it opens up a ton of other options.
For Gaudreau, he can find the open trailer, it gives his linemates time to go hard to the net to set up a screen, it gives the defense time to jump in to the play to use those screens, he cut east to west like we saw against the Oilers. In general, it can create a little more chaos in the coverage and open up space for him to be able to survey his options.
It’s the only thing some people recognize.
It can create space for him, sometimes it can draw 1 or 2 defenders. Many top players can draw a couple of defenders and create something
That was a brutal game but I’m not concerned. Didn’t expect a sweep
Sorry if it's been mentioned before but Kylington sure got the evil eye from both Toff and Johnny...seems like they were wanting to have the puck come back down the side to open up lanes/angles but Oliver persisted to take a weak shot from the point.
It’s not the button hook per se, it’s the fact he worked himself into that spot instead of a more central entry. Just like his low percentage shots from the side wasn’t a bad play at the moment - it was the moments leading to it.
Basically it means they successfully funnelled Gaudreau.
Well you kind of take what the defense gives you right? The way the Stars have defended the middle of the ice has been as good as it gets. I’d actually prefer Gaudreau to button hook rather than force plays through coverage, turn the puck over and give up chances going the other way.
Just looking at the Dallas Stars’ top line, it’s the same story. They’re not forcing anything either, they’re playing extremely conservatively and not hurting themselves in the process. This series unfortunately is what it is, we’ve got 2 teams not opening up, not giving their opponent anything and playing the most boring style of hockey on earth.
As a positive though, at the very least, I don’t think I’ve seen the Flames defend this well in the past playoff matchups. So at the very least, this gives me more confidence compared to the previous Ducks, Avs, Stars series.
Not sorry at all for saying this but Sutter needs to start swapping in players on the top line that WILL drive to the net, go to the tough areas and not just dump and NOT chase.... and why in the F is this strategy being used ? Dallas loves this ....oh they are dumping and NOPE not chasing....so thanks for the puck we will take it now and go score .
Whatever the hell makes these guys fear the rougher playoffs and takes away their drive to win is what will always plague this team in the playoffs.
You need the desire to want to win and do anything to do it otherwise you have the Calgary Flames on all seriousness.
Darryl needs to bring in a sport Psychologist or have a shovel and shotgun behind the bench to remind them if you aren't gonna dig deep maybe we'll just put you out of your misery instead .
Yeah it's 1 loss but I've seen this crap for so long it's now stacked so high that I'm asking how High can we stack this year's ####?
Buy in!!!! Do something? Losers give up , losers don't hit, losers don't have a scratch on them because frankly no one sees them as a threat and so they leave them alone to do nothing.
Winners get mad and channel that aggression into going to the tough areas , not backing down, not letting your linemate do all the heavy lifting so you don't have to break a sweat or get a boo boo.
God I just wanna see some success for once ....some effort, pushback, etc.
YOU want OVER 9 million to stay and play here?
Time to do the M Fing work.
Or
Just be a loser.

Go Flames
Yeah it’s gotta be some kind of confirmation bias or something.
If Gaudreau’s button hook leads to this, then no one complains.
But because it didn’t lead to anything last night, it’s now a problem. I don’t know about everyone else, but I think I’m going to defer to arguably the top offensive producer in the entire league this season, if he thinks the button hook is best option at the moment, then it probably is.

It’s not confirmation bias, it’s recognition that his play was limited due to more predictable entries. That plus the plays he can try off the button hook are inherently more risky, being close to the blue line.
Isn't that exactly what they did this year with STHs and seat availability? They could purchase additional seats and many of those STHs were looking to make money on selling those seats on the secondary markets. How does that make the in game experience at the Dome any better?
I was emotional after the loss last night and wasn't thinking straight. You are correct.
heck in 04 they were down 2-1 after 3 games! can you imagine
In 04 there were zero expectations, come on guy. We were just happy to be there.
Not only that, but in the old NHL we were a small market team with no realistic shot at competing with the big salary teams in the West like Detroit.
This year, most people are expecting conference final or it will be considered a massive disappointment, and could change the course of this franchise if Johnny and Tkachuk don't show well in the playoffs.
I think people need to realize it's no longer the 90s when 16 of 21 made the playoffs.
Dallas is a 98 point team not a bottom feeder
Flames are the better team but it's close... almost every series is 1-1
Sure, but they're also a team that only managed to win 31 out of 82 games after 60 mins this season. Excluding 3 on 3 and the shootout they went 31-30 in regulation time this season. 4 non playoff teams managed more wins in regulation than Dallas. Dallas is also the only playoff team this year with a losing record on the road and they just split the first two.
They're not a league bottom feeder but they are the bottom feeder of these playoffs.

89? Point being nothing is decided yet...its 1-1 like pretty much every other series. Flames have been outplayed one of six periods despite not having their A game.
If they actually lose this round we can worry about those things
