That should stop them from trying to take out another goalie

Good idea to penalize him. Wrong penalty to apply.

It wasn't the worst thing I've seen him do, but it was using the stick as a weapon against a goalie. This was after Pastrnak ran Raanta and knocked him out of the game earlier. If their 3rd stringer goes down with injury after that, that could be the series for Boston. The context matters a lot in this incident.

The only appropriate response is a game suspension, but player safety constantly passes the buck.

DOPS is doing its job perfectly: to make it look like something is being done about dangerous infractions so the media will shut up about them and go back to waving their pom-poms. It's actually a Department of PR Spin and Damage Control, but it wouldn't work if the league actually called it that. The name has to be part of the con.

Its a slash like any other slash. 2 Minute Minor, 5K for it being on a goalie is fine. It wasn't vicious to the head etc.. This guys wearing full gear.

Anyone calling for more is silly.

Well by this thinking then they should be able to slash Marchand to the head, he has a helmet and shield (?) on and is fully protected.

He slashed him in the arm after already bumping him for no reason...this is their 3rd stringer after Boston took out their #2 by running him.

If that happened to Markstrom I would expect someone to tune him in and take the suspension for the team. Shocked the Canes didn't do anything there, Bruins might have already cost them their shot by running the goalie.

It's not a loss of lunch money fine like the CFL but still $5k is kind of a joke of a fine when you consider how much players make. It would be like my company fining me $5 for breaking a company rule.

It didn't look like that bad a slash to me. Marchand is a prick but I definitely don't think that warrants any more than a fine

I think it's the fact that it's a two hander well after the play was whistled down. Even though it's not a bad slash it doesn't look good at all.

Yeah on Marchand's slash itself, I'm a bit meh (reaction, not the poster lol) about it. He shouldn't be doing it, the goalies need to be protected, so I agree with the penalty and the fine. Not really vicious to me though.

The Pastrnak hit on their goalie though? That was dirty for me. The goalie had the puck and he was chasing hard to try and cut off/deflect the pass, but him sticking his arm out is bad. I had no idea Pasta was that kind of player. Maybe he isn't, and just had a brain fart.

DOPS needs to change the fine to whatever that player would make in a game. Makes no sense that there is such a jump from 5k to 1 game (which includes no pay for that game).
If a player gets away with a fine it should at least be the same amount of $

I don't even get what Pastrnak was trying to do there. Usually if you're trying to get the goalie to give the puck away you either go where you think he's going to pass it (i.e. around the boards, if he's behind the net) or you try to get your stick on it to deflect it somewhere he doesn't want to go. Why skate right at him standing up?

Marchand is a clown. But also a heck of a player.

You take the good with the bad if you are a Bruins fan.
