Vladar is 90th in goals saved above expected, 73rd in save percentage above expected, 74th in GAA above expected. He's 50th in goals saved among expected for goalies with at least 10 games played.

The Flames, when coached by Sutter, are a team that seem to result in strong expected save percentages. Even Markstrom, with an elite season, is only 12th in that regard.

I don't think Wolf would be much, if any, lower than 90th. Practically every good goalie in the league played in the NHL by the age of the 22 (many of them starters by that point). Wolf probably isn't that far off.
But development is key, and a full year in the AHL was obviously good for Wolf's development. I believe the Flames are one of only 3 teams in the NHL to play only 2 goalies this year. Wolf actually had a pretty good chance of getting some games this year. But the team was relatively healthy and it just wasn't necessary. I think he should, and will, get some NHL time next year.

I posted about this in another thread. A couple of notes

There was a 10 game stretch where Marky’s 7 starts were mainly non playoff teams and frankly not very good ones, including Buffalo, NJ, Ari and Det , and the three games they gave Vladar were Col / Was / Col

In terms of games that dinged his stats, there were a few of note
- a 4 game losing streak in January, coming shortly after the Covid shutdown, where the entire team played poorly. Vladar gave up 4 in Tampa and 6 in Carolina, Marky 6 vs Florida and 4 vs Ottawa. At the time, Vladar had 7 prior games, so those decimated his stats

- 2 other games where he relieved Markstrom in the drubbings against Van and Vegas, and both goalies’ stats took a beating

Markstrom of course played in about 40 more games. We all appreciate that the team was very consistent all year, and he was excellent. And if you look at the bottom of the standings, you know he got most of the starts against those opponents in there

I really did not see a significant drop off from one to the other.

A tremendous season by the goalies.

Also..

Dan Frickin’ Vladar!

His main counting stats and underlying numbers are about what you'd expect from a better than average backup, but to me, it's the 13 wins that are great to see. I can't remember the last time we had a backup goalie that could win games consistently, let alone would it be expected of them.

He's a little inconsistent, but can make some big, big saves as well and can appear to be a brick wall at times. If he could do it all the time he'd be a starter.

Great kid, seems like a real pro, and has good talent to boot. Pretty great pick up.

He's under contract for next year as well yeah?

I guess even if he isn't his rights could be dealt for some picks if they truly believe Wolf is ready.

To my unqualified eyes, his rebound control appeared to improve throughout the year.

Interesting you say this because I felt his rebound control was his biggest problem in his last couple games.

To my eye Vladar is a rough version of Markstrom. Same general style, just not the experience and polish.

To those crediting Treliving for the acquisition of Vladar .....a Ton props to Jason Labarbera as Vladar was on his radar before Dan made his way here .....and Jagr as per above poster pointed out as well.....helped things along which is pretty darn cool .

And a ton of props to management for listening to players in the room as well as Darryl for convincing Treliving to go hard after their wants .

This is what is so awesome about picking up another Swede, some former Kings (even tho we lost one) and a recent cup Winner in Coleman.

Together I don't remember this team being this close in a long long time.

Just so impressed with Vladar and his incredible attitude as well as every interview I've seen he's so positive.

Vladar had good numbers in most of his wins, and terrible numbers in most of his losses. There were not a lot of games where the team outscored a poor night by him.

Again, his ‘terrible losses’ were in the 4 game L streak post Covid shutdown, lousy Flames just getting their legs, playing against hot Tampa and Carolina where he let in the same total of 10 goals over 2 games as Markstrom vs Florida and Ottawa

Credit also to Jordan Sigalet. He was smart enough to see where the management of the position is trending to become more in a management role & bring in someone like Labarbera. Jordan was recently on the In Goal Magazine podcast and talked about how he hopes that the team hires a goalie scout at one point.

Default Flames acquire goalie Daniel Vladar from Bruins for 2022 3rd

Would like to keep this guy around long term — he’s got the skill, athleticism and mental toughness to be a starter. Doubt he’s willing to wait out Markstrom’s contract though. I think someone will give him a shot sooner than later and will be rewarded .

Yep - and Markstrom didn't really put it together until he was 26 years old.

As long as Wolf keeps progressing it seems like the succession plan is in place as Vladar will be the backup next season and Wolf will assume the position in 2023/24 when Vladar leaves in free agency.

Won't he be an RFA at the end of this contract? Hopefully we can recoup an asset for him (2nd?).

According to capfriendly he's going to be arb eligible RFA yes.

I'm hoping he has such a strong year next season that the Flames can get 1st for him and then graduate Wolf to NHL back up.

Wolf will probably start getting some games next year, but if (and that is a big if) Wolf continues to progress...24/25 is the first time I could see him as a full time starter. By then you know what you have left in markstrom and what you have in Vladar. If everyone progresses as planned...you would let Markstrom go at that time.

However...early 20s goalies are like magic beans...look at Carter Hart to see what happens when you rush them...

If all goes as planned I suspect Wolf will eventually replace Vladar as the back up and learn the ropes behind Markstrom until his contract expires. Markstron has a full NMC through the entirety of his contract. If Vladar performs well and continues to improve he will be able to moved easily for a nice return.
