Or they could follow Lanny's lead and have all the A's do it as a group... but half of them would need to be in their underwear.
I suppose this makes the point about captains making a difference on-ice. In 89 none of the captains were big on ice producers. So much so that to of three were healthy scratches, and the guy who wasn't in the clinching game was often a healthy scratch.
It'll be Backs. But who he passes it to will be the bigger question.
Johnny? Likely Conn Smythe winner
Markstrom? Goalies are a huge part of SC runs.
A veteran like Tanev? Tradition.
A Swede? Flames are Team Sweden Lite.
A good problem to have.
EDIT: I meant Backs would receive the Cup not the captaincy.
The only way I see Backlund getting the C is if Tkachuk and Johnny are not Flames next year and this team is heading to a rebuild.
Yes, but even if he will not be named captain I don't think there is any question to that he would be the guy to first hoist the Cup if they won it this summer.

I'd like to see one named for the playoffs. The season gave every option a chance to prove themselves. Time to reward one of the 5 guys it could be
Don't like that idea.
Things are going as well as we could hope right now. Why potentially throw off the group by introducing a captain for the Playoffs?
Especially if it's someone without a contract next season like Chucky (who I think will ultimately be our new captain).
Yes, they're all professionals, but gotta think it'll mess with the head a bit for the player(s) who felt they had a good shot at captaincy and didn't get it, or even the player named captain who all of a sudden thinks they need to act differently.
Worry on naming a captain in the off-season. Pure 100% focus should be on playoffs.

My counter argument is that Tkachuk is already the unofficial Captain of this team, and therefore the dynamic wouldn't be altered at all.
I would also give his A to Johnny, as he's really taken on more of a leadership role this season. Darryl alluded to it recently when he said that Johnny has been much more demanding of his teammates this year. The allusion was in terms of holding people accountable on offense (addressing bad/missed plays, and just having the expectation that if you're on the ice with him, you'd better keep up). Aside from Darryl's comment, you can just see it with how involved Johnny is on the bench and after whistles.
Having said that, while I don't believe making Chucky the official C would change much of the dynamic, I do wonder about Johnny putting extra pressure on himself with a letter on his jersey. I 100% believe he's ready for it, and don't think it will be "Captain Theo Part 2," I just think he'd need a bit of time to get comfortable with it.
