This is what gets me: When Jeff Matek and Greg Wyshynski were talking about VGK yesterday they both agreed that there are still a few good years for that roster when healthy, and that they should be right back in the hunt for the Division next year. Do these guys either not know or not care that the Knights need to make substantial roster changes just to be cap compliant? No one knows what VGK will look like next year with the gutting they need to do. Such lazy editorialising.

PROJECTED CAP HIT - $83,866,667
SALARY CAP - $82,500,000
That's next year for Vegas. That's not signing a single RFA or UFA and having an 18 man roster. To keep players under contract, they'd have to release all of their FA's (U or R), then shed $4,866,667 and sign 5 league minimum players to be cap compliant and have a 23 man roster. I have no idea what their prospect pool is like, but have to imagine it is a shallow pool. Vegas' window is closed and will be for a bit is my hot take.

A healthy Stone and Lehner all season likely has them comfortably in a playoff spot this year...

I don't think we will ever see a healthy Stone again. It really sounds like his back is seriously messed up. And I don't see how Lehner returns to play in VGK.

As long as teams like Arizona continue to exist in their current state, there will always be a place to dump an overpriced contract along with some draft picks and prospects. Vegas will find a way to be cap compliant and ice a competitive roster next year, of that I have no doubt. How good they are when fully healthy remains to be seen.
I'm just glad they didn't make it this year with all the LTIR shenanigans. If nothing else, this will force the league to make an adjustment to that and it may hurt teams like Arizona too who are using it to fake being at the cap floor. Good.

It’s not even the LTIR shenanigans that make the Knights franchise so ####ty. It’s the way they relentlessly transformed a roster of likeable, overachieving underdogs with great chemistry into a roster of overpaid, entitled mercenaries. I can’t imagine what the last two years have felt like for one of the few original players remaining. Maybe it will all come out in a podcast someday.

Vegas might do well next year with a fully healthy Eichel though. I was against the Eichel trade mostly cause I really like how Tkachuk transformed his game and personality, and the question marks of knowing if Eichel would ever return to 100% after surgery. I like our players too much to trade for that.

I don't think Tkachuk was ever going to be traded for Eichel.

Probably not, nor would I have wanted it to be. However we might be singing a new tune if Tkachuk wants the bank this off season.

I think the Knights will bounce back next season and probably win the division if they can fix the goaltending situation but it's nice to see them sit this year out of the playoffs.

Again, this will depend very much on how the rest of that roster looks next year. It will be a much weaker group than what they had on paper all season. Then add to that the questions surrounding Stone's long-term health, another year of mileage for the likes of 32-year-old Pietrangelo, 33-year old Pacioretty, and 34-year-old Martinez. This is to say nothing for the uncertainty they have in goal.

Vegas made hay while they didn’t have to worry about what the rest of the league has to worry about. Expectation. It’s going to eat them alive in that town. Im predicting another miss and full rebuild next summer.

So tired of this franchise. Media darlings from day one and it's gross. Honestly hope they become the new Buffalo Sabres.

You have to think that every player in the league with trade protection will have Arizona at the top of his No Trade list for the foreseeable future.
Every Vegas player with a cap hit over $5 million has some form of trade protection except for Eichel and Theodore who aren't yet old enough to qualify -- and they both have trade protection once eligible, which for Eichel is July 1, and Theodore is 2023.

Most of the Vegas high contract players are decent players though.
I guess they could drop a few, but it seriously makes their team worse.
Plus they still need a goalie. Lehner might want out after the stupidity of this year and would you want to go into another year with him as your starter?

Right. Look at Dadonov. One of their best players in the last month and they were trying to give him away. It's clear that Dadonov is going to limit their ability to trade him. And while Lehner may want out, you can bet he will use his MNTC to dictate where he goes as far as possible as well. Do they want to go to AZ and play in front of 5K people (and see their stats die for the next contract)?
And yeah, lose Lehner and you have to go with Brossoit and Thompson. Thompson has looked pretty good but nothing about his past says anything more than he's a flash in the pan.

That depends on how bad they need to gut the team. And whether or not teams will be smart and take advantage of them being desperate to shed cap space.
