Speaking of Robbie Ray his strikeouts per 9 are not anywhere near his career average right now, it's early and he's only pitched 25 innings but he's usually around 11 and right now he is at 6.4. Gausman is however at 11.3 SO/9.

We're only 18 games in, which is a microscopic sample size in baseball, but the best Jay so far?
IMO, it's Espinal by a mile. He has been tremendous defensively, and has been the catalyst for much, if not most, of the offense do far. Such a great, and under-rated player.
(honourable mentions to Springer, Gausman and Romano)

Espinal has been a nice surprise for sure. I mean, he was poised for a potential break out, so not the biggest surprise I guess. Still though, Vlad and Springer have overall been the most productive Jays to this early point in the season.

No confidence in Stripling. Nobody is in the bullpen. Our guy Montoyo never learns his lesson.

Stripling playing with fire there. He's had a lot of 2 strike counts. Nice to see him close out a few AB's.
Be great if the bats came alive tonight. My nerves could really use a laugher.

You want Montoyo to go to the pen in the 3rd inning?

Welp, tie game and bring in Thornton to face the Red Sox best hitters. Kind of a predictable result lol
Looks like they'll have to try and come back yet again.

What if a more proven relief pitcher comes in to face the Red Sox best hitters? Like Richards who is now warming up...
In fairness it's not like Thornton got rocked I guess, just some crap luck on some weak contact that was well placed.

It would be nice to say you can use your weaker pitchers in blow out games but the problem is the Jays haven’t been in any of those. Borucki as well just got hurt again so yeah they’re going to have to use their pitchers. You can’t just play the same six all the time.

Well that's kind of obvious.
What's also obvious is that you probably shouldn't pick an inning where you're tied and Bogaerts/Devers are due up, to use your weaker arms out of the pen.
Probably use a guy like Richards for that gauntlet, and if he gets through it unscathed the next inning you can bring in Thornton for the less prolific hitters.

They wanted Thornton to go 2 innings to get them through 7 and it didn't work out. Not the end of the world. His first run against since opening day. No problem with the strategy there.

It's distractingly annoying. But the guy can throw hard for such a short individual.
