I think it’s referring to the violent manner of the hit being the result of distance travelled.
I can see arguments for it not being considered charging given the fact that the violence of the hit had more to do with the speed gained coming down the ice and less to do with the small amount of distance covered after he cut around the other player, but it was called a penalty, so it was a penalty.

I get that's what they're trying to say, but it's nonsense. You don't have to be a physicist to know that 'distance' is a completely irrelevant variable. There are three (six) things that determine the nature/violence of a hit:
1. Speed of each player
2. Size/mass of each player
3. Body positioning/motion of each player (a lot going on here including player awareness, follow through, etc.)
Distance travelled maybe informs a bit of #1 and #3, but it's a really silly thing to regulate by.

Refs will need more assets:
Radar gun
Weight scales
Mental telepathy
Silly things indeed.

Well distance informs a lot of number #1. I don't find the rule all that ridiculous personally but would agree the wording leaves a bit to be desired.
To me it seems rather clear the rule is intended to regulate hits delivered by a skater at full speed. Not the speed of the player receiving it.

This is the prob with a guy with low hockey IQ. Why even do this at all? a few inches here and there, and he hits his head he would get 5 games+.
Plays like this will cost the Panthers in the playoffs. Just like last year.

Sam's first full season with the Panthers:
First Half
29gp 15g 8a 23pt
18:06 ATOI
0.79 pp/g and 78% of his production was ES
Played as the #1/2C between Huberdeau and Duclair
Second Half
39gp 12g 12a 24pt
16:04 ATOI
Played as the #2/3C with a mix of linemates
0.62 pp/g and 83% of his production was ES
Florida still has two games left, but Sam appears to have dialed his game back a little bit for durability. He's still terrible in the dot (46%). He's trusted in all situations, but mostly deployed at ES and on the PP. His advanced stats are good, along with everyone else on the Panthers.
How successful is Bennett's first full season with the Panthers? How much more does Sam's departure hurt given the Monahan situation?

I love Sam and wish he had a place on the flames, but I don’t think he would fit this lineup.
Backlund is the more experienced #2 C and has been healthy, so Bennet would have still been relegated to the 3rd or 4th lines all season and be no where near a 50pt season.
We wouldn’t have had the assets to acquire Toffoli without the Bennet trade, and until that trade, we were desperate for a top 6 RW and needed that more than a bottom 6 LW/C.

No wonder this thread had gone dormant for so long.
I don't have any ill will towards Benny but my God it was annoying having this thread bumped every time he scored a goal or whatever.

my 45-50 points seems right on the money...was called a hater for saying he would end up there when he was over PPG
Still a really quality season but yeah we don't really need to bump this every time he takes a poo. Yes the Flames drafted Bennett and he is doing well elsewhere, at the same time we have players like Markstrom and Lindholm who were drafted elsewhere and now dominate for the Flames, just the nature of sports.
I understand the irony of bumping this to complain about bumping it lol

He still remembers how to fight. After Sergachev drove Giroux face first into the boards last night (no penalty called), Bennett challenged him and let him have it.

i look forward to seeing this discussion remain near the top of the FoI sub-forum as the Panthers march towards glory this summer and the legend of Sam continues to grow faster than the known universe

Always impactful, just depends how much he’s in the box and for what reason. Happy he found a role, glad he wasnt’t lights out for them.

Sutter would have worked his magic with him but I’m liking our team at this point!

As solid a season as Bennett has had, he’s only 8th or 9th on Florida in scoring. He’s a nice complementary player but I wouldn’t call him a core contributor.

I would have liked the Flames to retain Bennett but it is over. I am glad they sent him to Florida because this would have been brutal had the Flames sent him to the Leafs or another Canadian team.
The Flames used both assets they got in the deal to help them land Toffoli and Jarnkrok who are key players on the team. Bennett has a nice co tract and done well in Florida. The Flames acquired 2 former top 5 picks who were not quite living up to their draft positions 4 years ago and they are still reaping the benefits of that deal with a 40 goal 80pt first li e C and a 46pt top pairing all situations Dman.

23-year-old Dillon Dube has 9 in his last 15 games and 12 points. Why the hell is anyone still pining for Sam Bennett when the Flames have their own young centre in the lineup who looks like he is ready to pop?
