Felix takes the opening set 6-3 playing some fine tennis.

We're going to a 3rd set as Diego takes set 2 6-2. Felix played okay, his Argentine opponent really upped his level in that second set.

Arguing over marks on a clay court again and I think Felix has a point, it sure looked like Diego's smash was wide, but it's called in. It was a pretty crucial point as well, 1-1 and 30-all.

Diego takes it 3-6 6-2 6-3 - The turning point was the questionable call above as not only did Diego go on to hold serve, but Felix was clearly rattled and he was broken in the very next game. Sure would have liked to have seen a Hawk-Eye replay as I truly think it was out. Oh well.

so you're telling me you did not feel the exhilaration of watching the umpire climb down from his chair and people pointing at the ground and talking forcefully to each other? what kind of fairweather fan are you?

lol - Jack, we have the technology on close line calls and even Tennis TV is embracing Hawk-Eye on their replays when it is available to confirm whether or not the correct call was made. This is not a criticism of clay court tennis, but rather a criticism of hanging on to tradition when it is no longer needed.

So if Alcaraz can beat Greek Yogurt and Norrie loses to De Minaur, Alcaraz will move into the top 10 in the ATP rankings.

Tsitsipas just tried to take off Alcaraz's head on set point with a bullet of a forehand. Carlos takes the opening set 6-4 and Greek Yogurt is pissing his pants lol

Carlos with a massive return game and he's up a break in set 2. No coaching from Pops is going to help Stef at the moment.

So wait a tick, Tsitsipas just challenged a call and they have the FoxTenn system (Hawk-Eye competitor). Why don't they have this on all the courts to allow the players to challenge?

I don't know if I agree with Gill, that was a blatant attempt to plunk an opponent. Yes, nothing in the rules against it, but still pretty bad form.

Oh man, Alcaraz was up a double-break serving at 4-1 in set 2 and then Greek Yogurt won six of the next seven games to take set 2 7-5. Off to a 3rd set.

Edit: Tsitsipas tried to plunk Alacaraz again lol - The net cord got in the way.

the hand up and apologizing would be worse than the body shot, i cheer for heat and tension too.

And i don't think that was anything, he hit that from the baseline, not from the frontcourt purposely.

Let's agree to disagree GS, that was a intended body shot to rattle the kid. Pretty similar to this one (at about 1:20 in)

Carlos Alcaraz is a top 10 player at 18 years old.

GY had plenty of time to line up a proper passing shot, but look how weird his swing was and how the ball just flies off screen into the back wall. that's an indisputable beanball. he'll have plenty of time to think about it while packing his bags for Madrid.

I don't think that's anything either. It's from the baseline. You can hit a shot at a guy to handcuff his volley.

Now this is on purpose from close range. at 1:05

so I found a Matt Willis article from a year ago discussing the hesitation around computer line calling on clay

https://theracquet.substack.com/p/le...umpires-on?s=r

since Hawkeye is a simulation with a defined margin of error, it's probably never going to be accepted on clay. but the Foxtenn system with the bounce replay doesn't fix everything either, because at super shallow angles the ball can just barely graze the court before impact and not leave a mark until later in its trajectory. so you'll end up with the system disagreeing with the marks that players and umps know and love, and mass hysteria will ensue.

the only way for Foxtenn to be used on clay is if they just declare that marks are not valid for line calling under any circumstances. that is going to be a tough sell.
