With two goals last night Ovi hit 50 on the year. He’s now tied Bossy and Gretzky for the most 50 goal seasons with 9. Does he have another 50 goal season left in him?

He got screwed with the two shortened COVID seasons and a lockout season too.
In 12-13 he had 32 in 48 games - that is a pro-rated 55 goal season.
In 19-20 he had 48 in 68 games - so would have easily gotten if COVID didn't shut that season down.

Yup.
I didn't he would catch Gretzky but I think he will be the first 1000 goal scorer in NHL history.

With his shot, he could play until he's into his 40s without adding much else.

Gordie Howe was out of the NHL for 6 years. If not, he might have scored more than Wayne.

8 years technically having played his last game with the Wings in 71 and then rejoining the league in the 1979-1980 season.
But his last season before retirement (then WHA) was 52 points in 63 games. Even if he averaged 60 points in those 8 years, he would still be quite far from Gretzky.
EDIT: We talking goals, I'm an idiot.

I'd be super wary of using Howe's 100 point seasons in the WHA as a basis. Walton went from 47 points in 56 games with the Bruins to leading the WHA with 117 points in 78 games. Lacoix had 11 points in 51 games with the Hawks and then put up 124 points with the WHA Blazers the next season.
EDIT: troutman talking goals, not points, he's probably right. But then maybe Gretzky sticks around longer to pass Howe's goals or comes back after a couple years off if he fixed his back. Howe retired because of his wrist injury, he didn't leave the NHL to go to the WHA.

Howe played 1767 NHL games. How effective would he really have been if he played 600 more?

Just broke the record for road goals. Now 8 behind Howe and 101 behind Gretzky according to the broadcast.

I used to think Gretzky's 894 goals would never be broken but AO just may be able to do it.

As others have mentioned, it's too bad Ovi had to sit through 2 lockouts and 2 years of Covid affected seasons. We could have been talking about him chasing 1,000 goals at this point of his career rather than just trying to beat Gretzky's record.

Yup.
30 from the 04-05 lockout year
22 from the 12-13 lockout
10 from 19-20 Covid year
20 from the 20-21 Covid shortened year
That’s another 82 goals. Really he should be at like 875 goals right now and on pace to pass Gretzky this season, and likely to have 1000+ for his career

Conservative numbers. He scored 52 his rookie year. Easily woulda had 40+ if they played in 2005.

Have we got to the point now where we can say Ovi is the greatest goal scorer even before he catches Gretzky?

Depending on whether they played it with pre or post-lockout rules.
41 goals led the league in 2003-04. 40 goals was 10th overall in 2005-06.

Also, if he had been born 2 days earlier, he would have been draft eligible a year earlier and that could have meant another 30+.

Add to that, using the era adjusted scoring, Gretzky probably benefited an extra 150 goals playing in that era.

Wasn't it closer to 1 day. I recall a story that the late Roger Nielson tried to make an argument based on leap years to try and draft him the year before.
