A lot of action can drive the odds down but they are set based on expectations and Vegas is really good at setting odds.

ESPN had an article about the major awards odds today

As you point out, most people are betting on Matthews. Those are predictions which are heavily in his favor.

Everyone who bet on him winning has predicted it…

15 times in NHL history has a player finished a season with a +/- of 60 or better and 90 EVP or more.

Gretzky (6 times)
Bossy (2 times)
Lafleur (2 times)
Coffey
Esposito
Hodge
Kurri
Trottier

13 of these 15 seasons happened in a ten year span between 1976-77 and 1986-87. Esposito and Hodge formed 2/3 of the then highest-scoring line of all time for the Bruins in 1970-71. No one has accomplished this feat since Gretzky in 86-87.

A season for the absolute ages.

Johnny should be in the conversation, and will probably finish in or around the top 5... even though the voting is complicated by having Josi in there, because that also brings in Makar, because frankly notwithstanding the point totals Makar has been just about as good as Josi and some people will say "well if I'm voting one in I'm voting for both". I think Shesterkin is a lock to finish somewhere in the 3-4 range.

But Matthews is far more than just a goal scorer this season. I can't wait for the Leafs to blow a lead and lose in spectacular fashion in the playoffs, but he's basically as undeniable this year as McDavid was last year in my view.
Wat? get real

and a historic plus/minus isn't meaningless

Matthews will probably win it with all their media but his team has a better record without him, I highly doubt that would happen if Gaudreau missed a handful

I don't believe Johnny will get the Hart. That doesn't take away from his season though.

It would likely cost the Flames another million anyway but it does seem a little unfair. At the very least he should be a finalist

Also, still some games to go

IMO the point total, the +/- and the even strength dominance should give him the hart, add to the fact Flames are 1st in the division. Living in Toronto however I know it'll go to Mathews. I hope he is nominated though. Ridiculous the numbers he's putting up, especially since he is probably last among these other guys in TOI and pp TOI. Winning the hart may add another half/mill to his contract demands though.

Averaging 4min less in ice time per game than McDavid. Johnny should win the heart, no doubt it in my mind.

Yeah pretty amazing that Gaudreau is only 3 points behind McDavid despite McDavid being on the ice 270 more minutes this season. Hard for anyone to objectively say McDavid had a better season.

No one is actually nominated.

The 3 finalists are simply the top 3 finishers after the voting is completed.

As has been said, any one of 5 or 6 players could legitimately win the award this year.
Just some incredible seasons.

I don't think Mcdavid gets in the top 3 this year.
for him, it's just an average year, and there are so many deserving candidates.

Probably going to be one of the closest races ever.
I'd for sure have Gaudreau in my top 5.

I'd say if Huberdeau wins the Art Ross, that will push him over the top.

Unfortunately with the Eastern bias and Matthews a Leaf setting the single season goal scoring record, I just don’t see a way Johnny wins.

I agree with you, though the bolded is a Leaf record only. Not an NHL record. He’s still 8 behind the Flames record. Not to take away from Matthews since he’s done it with six games injured.

If Johnny passes McDavid, he will finish second in the voting. If he doesn’t, he’s between 3-6, depending on Shesterkin and Josi votes. And don’t count on the players for the Lindsay either. For some reason they seem fixated on McDavid.

Here I am giggling to myself that a good old Montreal screw job might actually come out in calgarys favor this time, if a few writers there desperately don't want to see a leaf win and leave Matthews off their ballots entirely.

Too lazy to do it myself, but there should be a thread about just how crazy this season has been for some of the numbers some players have put up. Obviously everyone on the Flames' top line. Josi. Kreider (!). Huberdeau. Mathews. NYR goalie. Even Matt freakin' Duchene is having his best season ever.

Hard to pick a true Hart candidate list but for sure Mathews and McDavid (if he wins the Art Ross) will be there, just for the league to ensure that there is fan interest league-wide. If Mathews makes the ballot, he is the likely winner. Really it comes down to who gets the 3rd spot. Hoping Johnny can make it on but there are honestly more candidates this season then I can remember. I'm sure Pred's fans will say the same about Josi. A 'generational' season by a d-man adding to his HOF career.
