I really wish there was some way to watch that entire Hugh Hefner roast. Not on streaming, not available to buy, not even available anywhere on the high seas. One of the best roasts ever with one of the all-time performances by Gilbert and it's apparently lost to time, it's a tragedy
That is some crude humour in that roast holy ####. Is George Takei even gay, how did Gottfried not get cancelled over that.
Did he really talk like that or was that an act as well, hard to say.
Uh, yeah, it's been a well documented part of his social media presence in older age. He's been one of the most vocal members of that community since the early 2000's.
That clip is also from a looooong time ago. 2008. Some words, while still considered offensive, were not taboo then. Context is important. Cancel culture was not a thing back then.

It's weird that this is available but I'm glad it is. Here's his celebration of life. Skip to 18:00 to see Jeff Ross and other comedians speak, but his wife Dara's tribute is worth watching.
Man...that lot of comedians are a dying breed. Now comics are getting bitch-slapped for unremarkable comments, guys like Gottfried, Ross and the 'Old Guard' wouldnt stand for that nonsense.
Comedians don’t get old.
It’s a hard life, being on the road every weekend 48 months a year. It’s not something that lends itself to healthy eating, exercise, and good sleep.
Norm MacDonald was never not nervous before he went on stage - that level of stress has to do things to a body.
Now, as far as things you can’t say anymore - let’s not pretend like punting celebrities for what they say hasn’t always been a thing.
Before Bill Maher was on HBO, he had a show called “Politically Incorrect” on ABC. Then, he said “we’re the ones being cowards, lobbing cruise missile from a thousand miles away - staying in the airplane when it hits the building, say what you want about it, it’s not cowardly.”
Janet Jackson was just one of the biggest pop stars in the world - half a second of boob during a half time show and she basically disappeared from public life. Justin Timberlake, meanwhile, became a movie star.
The Dixie Chicks were a hugely successful group, and then overnight became radioactive because they had the audacity to be against the invasion of Iraq.
Some of this is “die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain” stuff. Some of it is new groups attaining new levels of power. You used to be cancelled for being gay. Now, if you’re not supportive of the cause, you’re out. Which is unfair, but is it any more unfair than tying a gay kid to a fence and beating him to death?
Great comics keep moving forward. They tell the idiot masses “go duck yourselves.” Because that’s the message that really needs to be delivered.

And if you've heard a lot of Takei's appearances and such on the Stern show, he's pretty clearly not offended by these jokes.

It's better now for comics than it's ever been, because they no longer have to go through the studio system to get famous. Comedians can do shows, sell their own merchandise, podcast, youtube, patreon, etc. completely on their own. Louis CK has been quietly rebuilding his career the last couple years because he doesn't have to wait for the studio system to forgive him.
When a comedian gets cancelled now, it basically just means they have to take a step back for a couple months and then they pretty much go right back to where they left off: Ari Schaffir and the Kobe controversy; Shane Gillis on SNL; Chris D'elia's accusations of inappropriate sexual conduct. They just have to wait a couple news cycles and people forget about it.

lol yeah, and he thankfully he knows what a joke is and understands it's purpose
Gilbert during a roast shortly after 9/11 said he had to make it quick because he had a "really early flight to LA in the morning, they have a layover at the empire state building for some reason."
People totally freaked out but it was basically his FU to the terrorists, we aren't living in fear you stupid ####s
Pretty much all the cancel-culture outrage comes from a very small, but very loud group of outrage-addicts who are always searching for their next hit and they can only remember up to 3-6 months worth of events at a time.

Just wading in to say that I understand why the title is the way it is. But it’s a bad look for the forum. When it first came up for my it was shortened to just “Cheap Jew Gilbert Gottfried…” and honestly I’d assumed he’d done something horrible enough to warrant the title.
Again, yeah it’s an okay joke. I don’t think it’s worth having that phrase on the site in general. Personally.

If it were in the context of anyone else, I’d agree.
It’s Gilbert Gottfried. He’d think it was funny, and he’d also recognize DownInFlames would’ve only done that from a place of genuine affection and sadness at his passing.
IMO, anyway.

Look, I know we all want to be outraged by everything these days, but maybe...just maaaaayyyyybbbbeeeee....you don't get to be more offended than the party that should be most offended.
Relax, it's just a joke.

While that may be true, I can't imagine someone holding their wife up as the final answer on anti-semitism as proof to the internet that it is OK.
